Rising Stars: Meet Jose Alexzander

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jose Alexzander.

Jose, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am a multi-talented individual hailing from Panama City, Panama, with expertise in photography, hair design, and upcycling. Seventeen years ago, I made the life-changing decision to move to Miami in pursuit of enhancing my artistic skills and knowledge in digital photography at the renowned Art Institute.

As I embarked on this new chapter, I found myself drawn to the world of filmmaking, assuming various roles as a writer, producer, and director. It was a remarkable achievement when one of my short films, titled “Beyond the Life,” was selected for the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in 2015. Additionally, I established the Bright Minds Film Festival from 2013 to 2014, which aimed to showcase films that inspire and uplift spirits.

Throughout my journey, I have consistently promoted sustainable practices, embodying a deep-rooted passion for upcycling that has guided me throughout my life. Over the past decade, I have dedicated my efforts to @Love for Upcycling, a company aimed at supporting and promoting upcycling artists. As a self-taught upcycle designer specializing in clothing and jewelry, I have honed my skills and channeled my creativity toward creating unique pieces.

Currently, I am on the verge of unveiling a sustainable swimwear line named “UpcyCozy,” which represents a harmonious blend of my love for upcycling and my commitment to sustainability. and a new e-commerce platform for all the artists in the world that practice upcycling and recycling. UPCYS.COM.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Although the road hasn’t always been smooth, I have been fortunate to find a multitude of people who have supported me from the very beginning. I am deeply grateful to Mary Moran, who has been one of my most steadfast supporters, providing unwavering encouragement throughout my journey. I am also indebted to my dear friends Sandra and Carola, who have consistently been by my side, offering support and embracing all of my wild and creative ideas.

In my perspective, life is akin to a labyrinth, with each wall representing an obstacle that guides us toward our ultimate destination. It is up to us to determine how we navigate this intricate path and how we respond to each hurdle we encounter. Rather than viewing these walls as negative forces, I believe they serve as guiding forces, steering us in the right direction and propelling us forward.

We all have different ways of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
The concept of success has been widely misunderstood over the years, making it an intriguing topic to explore. It is essential to recognize that success cannot stand alone as a singular term; rather, it should always be accompanied by an adjective that specifies the particular aspect of achievement being referenced. For example, we commonly associate success with financial accomplishments, as that is what most people understand success to mean. However, this narrow definition is far from accurate.

True success extends beyond monetary gains. Consider a mother who, despite her limited financial means, manages to raise three children and support them in becoming successful professionals. Her ability to nurture and guide her children toward a fulfilling life is a testament to her incredible success. It is not solely about money; rather, it is about the results achieved and the profound happiness derived from those accomplishments.

Furthermore, success and fame are often erroneously interlinked. Fame does not automatically equate to success, and vice versa. Fame may bring attention and recognition, but it does not necessarily guarantee genuine accomplishment or fulfillment. Success should be measured by personal growth, reaching meaningful goals, and finding contentment in one’s endeavors, rather than the pursuit of fleeting fame.
