Rising Stars: Meet Jiahui Yu

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jiahui Yu

Hi Jiahui, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started learning piano from five years old and have been using logic for writing music since I was 14. I have always had a strong interest in computer music. During this period, I learned computer music composition and later successfully enrolled in Berklee to learn the related things systematically. At Berklee, I mainly studied creating music for visual media – Film and Video game scoring, which I think brings more value and enables me to feel more of it from my deep heart.

During my college years, I took on many projects both on and off campus: writing for pop music, short films, games, animations and documentaries. I also do arranging and songwriting. Some of them are from the US; some are from China. At the same time, I received the dean’s list for all 8 semesters and kept my GPA at 3.96/4.

After college, I got back to China and started writing video game music for an internet company – Bilibili, in 2022. Now I quit my job and seeking for media scoring and production on my graduate life in Frost School of Music, University of Miami. In 2024, I got full scholarship and start working at frost school as a teaching assistant.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
For me, the biggest obstacle is that when I overwork, my body health can’t support it. I used to sit in a chair for eight hours writing music without moving. Because when you’re working on something, it’s hard to feel the passage of time. This leads to some neck and shoulder problems, and sometimes back pain. At the same time, because of the lack of exercise, o the body function also has a significant decline. I often feel tired without doing anything.

The best way to solve this problem is to control the time sitting in the chair every day and go out for more activities, but it is often difficult to achieve when the workload is heavy. Therefore, I think strengthening the control of workload and time management can gradually solve this problem.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’ve done a lot of music composing and arranging in the graduation works of students in the professional fields among film and television editing, game design and art creation. In addition, I have many original songs and pure music works, and firmly committed to writing original music works. I proficient in various sound and music editing and notation software such as Sibelius, Protools, Cubase and Logic Pro x. I’m also good at a wide range of musical genres, especially with special experience in writing orchestras.

In the 21st century, most people’s basic needs can be met. More people begins to pursue the spiritual level of freedom and abundance, which precisely reflects the necessity of the existence of contemporary artists. As a working artist, my ultimate goal is to be able to create real value for human beings, both now and in the future. In my opinion, as long as the people who create art with a good attitude, they are all priceless artists. If his work creates real value for people, such as saving a depressed person who has fallen to the bottom of the rock, then I think the artist has truly made the world a better place.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
COVID-19 hit my first year of college. As an international student, I still clearly remember that I was at a loss when I encountered such things in the first year of studying in the United States. As the school changed to online courses, I could not afford the huge rent and living expenses, and I resolutely chose to go back to China for online courses.

Although I lost two years of study in the United States because of COVID-19, I still made good use of my time while having online courses in China. Due to the time difference, I did some internships online and offline at different music studios during the day, and took online classes at home at night. I know it’s really tough, but these two years of internship have helped me tremendously. Not only did I have a deeper understanding of the commercial market of the music industry, but I was also exposed to more music-related projects. During this period, I also learned the basic of guitar, bass and drums by myself, so that I could do the scoring and arranging better.

The most important lesson I learned during this period is time management, which also provides me with higher efficiency in my later work and study.
