Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Baker.
Hi jennifer, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My name is Jennifer, I am the owner and creator of Key Z Crafts. It began in 2017 as a fun creative project making island inspired, unique gifts.
Today, I am especially proud of my Island Body skin care line. My soaps, body butters, lotions and scrubs were made and inspired by my beautiful daughter Brittany.
Those of you that know me probably know my daughter and her situation. Long story short, in 2013 she was in a car accident, she suffered multiple life threatening injuries including a devastating TBI. She survived and currently resides in a long term care facility.
Over the last decade, I’ve tried to keep her in the best quality skin care, lip balm and body wash products. Just one of the small things I can do for her. The products they use at the hospitals and long term care facilities are not at the level I would want for her or anyone for that matter.
I spent months researching, testing and tweaking my recipes for a hemp based line of body butters, lotions and sugar scrubs for Brittany. Her nursing staff loved it so much, they encouraged me to start selling it, so here we are.
Hence the light bulb went off in my head. Why not make them myself? I realized that I have the skills and tools to make my own high quality natural ingredient soaps, lotions and scrubs. So that’s exactly what I did.
All scent blends are island inspired, made with quality ingredients that are tropical and smell amazing. I am very proud of what I have created. I love my products and I think you will too!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road — there’s been a big learning curve along the way. I work full time as the General Manager for Dolphins Plus, so trying to balance a busy career while growing my own business has been challenging at times. Finding time for everything, and still making sure I take care of myself too, has probably been the hardest part. But I’ve learned a lot through the process, and seeing everything come together makes it worth it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve always been a creative person and love learning new processes and creating new things. What started as a personal passion really grew into something meaningful for me. I enjoy making products that are natural, effective, and inspired by the Florida Keys lifestyle.
What I’m most proud of is creating quality products for my daughter — knowing exactly what goes into them and feeling good about using them on the people I love most. I think what sets me apart is that everything comes from a very personal place. I genuinely care about the ingredients, the experience, and creating products that people can feel good about using every day.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Start small and give yourself time to learn. Test, test, test — and don’t rush to put something out until it’s truly everything you want it to be. I’ve learned that patience is such a huge part of the process. Things don’t always happen overnight, but if you stay consistent and keep improving, it’s worth it. Most importantly, be proud of what you’re creating and enjoy the journey along the way.
