Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Ornelas.
Hi Jasmine, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born in Seattle and at a young age, moved to Miami with my mom and older brother. Growing up, I never really had a hobby or activity that was constant in my life. In middle school, I vividly remember hanging out with a friend and doing her makeup (poorly, lol) so that I could take pictures of her at the community playground. I messed around with my point-and-shoot camera that was able to capture images in sepia. It was my best work at the time, haha.
Fast forward a few years, and I’m around 15 or 16, taking pictures at a church summer camp. I was still unsure of what I was doing but having a great time shooting with my mom’s camera on automatic. This led to me taking my first film photography college course at 16 years old. It was incredible. I was a tiny 16-year-old among all these adults, dealing with a strict professor, having to use equipment I have never even messed with before. It was life-changing, and I am forever grateful for that class and Tony Chirinos for helping me grow a backbone. Since then, I’ve taken courses, tried and failed, and learned so much to get to where I am today. I’m currently back in school, working towards my BFA to become a middle and high school photography teacher.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I wish it has but not at all. I’ve struggled and honestly still struggle with a lot of self-doubt in my craft. It’s gotten better, but it takes work to remind myself of the things I have accomplished through photography. I suppose part of it also comes from this goal to do something with my photography but not showing myself grace with the time it will take to get there.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a photographer. I specialize in fashion and editorial but also enjoy capturing special moments for my clients. I am most proud of being published. It’s something that I’ve been able to accomplish throughout the years. It is always an exciting feeling to share my work and the inspiration behind what I’m producing. I also love collaborating and meeting new people through it.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I suppose my advice would be to put yourself out there. It can be terrifying but comforting when you meet people on a similar journey of either creating a small business or trying to figure out what route they want to take with their craft. Also, reaching out to people you may want to work with has helped me meet new people. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t, but at least you tried!
