Rising Stars: Meet James Tenney

Today we’d like to introduce you to James Tenney.

James Tenney

Hi James, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
The pandemic hit and we were forced indoors. We sat around and watched plenty of Netflix and we decided to do something for our overall mental health situation and get out of the house. Considering local farms were doing contactless delivery, we felt safe in doing so.

We also went to a church and got a free box of fresh vegetables. We originally hoped to make a few jars for ourselves, and if we had too much, we could give back to our local community when and where we could. After trying the first few jars we were hooked. We started picking a variety of vegetables and pickles.

We then had some neighbors try them and by word of mouth we sold a few jars. We started a webpage and got on social media and started to grow. We sold almost 5,000 jars within our first 6 months via contactless local delivery in Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Since our business was born “organically” (no pun intended) it was smooth at first. Businesses aren’t created on smooth roads, it’s the bumps that make you who you are!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Growing up, I learned how to pickle my grandmother and godmother in New England and Massachusetts.

As a teenager, I started in the restaurant business washing dishes and worked my way to being an Executive Chef in the Hamptons. I walked away from the restaurant business years ago, and then the pandemic hit, but this time it’s different…

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
We now have over 30 menu items that we pickle. We can be found at Yellow Green Farmers Market in Hollywood, FL every weekend.

You can also order a Bloody Mary with our Spicy Garlic Pickle featured at PLA in the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. We are also on all social media outlets @inapickletraders.
