Today we’d like to introduce you to James Ippolito.
Hi James, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Prior to my law enforcement career I was a firearms and self defense instructor. I then created All American Firearms Academy in 2012. I ran my business along side my law enforcement career for 10 years. During my career I ventured into Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as it was the most effective and applicable martial arts for the job. I have been training and competing in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu consistently since beginning the art. Winning multiple gold medals in the IBJJF and the biggest win was the Pan American Championship in 2020. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has definitely changed my life in ways I would never imagine. It has definitely made me a better person. I ended my law enforcement career in 2023 and went full time with my business. With all my skills developed I knew it was time to began pursuing an acting career something Ive always dreamed of. I always wanted to be in movies especially action, sci-fi and drama. The hardest part was finding a good agent. Through a booking for a teleprompter job I made a connection who recommended Talent Direct Agency. Initially it was very difficult to contact them but with persistence I finally got through. I was scheduled a zoom interview and although the only acting experience I had was from middle school drama class I was given an opportunity and signed on the spot. My agent told me that I had a lot of work to do to gain experience and build a resume. I did everything she instructed and now I am a full time actor. I have been in several commercials, feature films and short films. In 2024 I attended a Firearms for actors workshop hosted by a well known stunt coordinator in Miami. Through the course i was able to showcase my skills in weapons handling and fighting. I was scouted from that work shop and began training with Miami Action Design before they officially opened to the public. This has opened many opportunities for me in the acting world and stunt world. Through stunts I became SAG Eligible.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When I decided to pursue a career in law enforcement back in 2009, the timing couldn’t have been more challenging. It was during the recession, and many agencies were not sponsoring recruits to attend the academy. That meant I had to fund my own training, which I managed by DJing three nights a week. I had been a DJ since I was 14 and maintained a local residency, which allowed me to support myself and pay my way through the police academy.
The state certification I earned was only valid for four years, and during that time, agencies were slow to hire and had extremely strict requirements. I was fortunate to be sworn in just two days before my certification was set to expire. Had it lapsed, I would have had to repeat the entire six-month academy process all over again.
Throughout my law enforcement career, I faced numerous challenges — from dealing with dangerous criminals to helping people through their most difficult moments, often witnessing trauma and death firsthand. However, I also developed skills I never imagined I’d have. Over the years, I gained leadership experience and served in a variety of roles, including road patrol, detective, field training officer, hostage and crisis negotiator, firearms instructor, defensive tactics instructor, and training coordinator for the agency.
After ten years, I made the decision to retire early and transition into the private sector, leveraging my skills to start a new career in film and business. It was a daunting move, as it meant leaving a stable career to take a significant risk. Thankfully, I had been running my own business alongside my law enforcement career, and by the time I left, it was established enough to sustain me.
Today, I own and operate All American Firearms Academy, where I work as a firearms instructor, self-defense trainer, and fitness coach.
For anyone pursuing a similar path or facing obstacles in achieving their goals, my advice is simple: never give up. Every time you hit a wall, find a way around it. Take every opportunity, even if you’re not getting paid, and be willing to do whatever it takes to make your vision a reality. The grind is tough, but eventually, doors will open — as long as you keep pushing. Most people quit right before they reach the turning point where everything begins to fall into place, and that’s when regret sets in. Don’t be one of them.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My acting career has been diverse. I have been casted in commercials and films. For films I usually get casted as a police officer or VIllain. For commercials blue collar worker or a dad roll. What sets me apart from the rest is I know my vision and I will do whatever it takes to get there. People in the beginning get hung up on the monetary value and loose out on opportunities. Acting has never been about the money for me. When I’m on set I am so present that I know its right where I belong. I don’t turn down opportunities. I have done many acting roles for free and consistently collaborate with people who vibe on the same frequency of doing it because of the love not the money. The money comes always. With taking these opportunities it builds more organic connections, presents more opportunities and opens more doors. There has not been a creative project that I have done that hasn’t produced this. Also along my journey I am always aspiring to help others get started or give advice based on my experience. I feel this goes along way and ultimately helps the next person.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Growing up, my father was a police officer who also worked two additional jobs to provide for our family. For the first eight years of my life, my mother was a stay-at-home mom who made sure we were cared for, fed, clothed, and got to school on time. My father was the sole provider, and while we often wore hand-me-downs, we never went without. If there was ever something we really wanted, my dad would put in the extra hours to make it happen.
My parents instilled in me strong morals, a sense of integrity, and the value of hard work. They taught me to never give up, to be honest, and to appreciate the value of every dollar earned.
Some of my fondest memories include our annual camping trips in upstate New York, where we would spend several weeks outdoors as a family. Sports were also a big part of my upbringing. My brother and I were constantly active, playing soccer, lacrosse, ice hockey, and football year-round. Being so involved in sports not only kept us busy but also taught me the importance of teamwork and leadership from an early age.
