Rising Stars: Meet Dr. Eric Otero

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Eric Otero.

Hi Dr. Otero, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Working in the healthcare field for over 10 years with athletes from all levels, there has been a massive need for providing individualized care clients to help clients recover from both injuries and improve their overall performance. Pinnacle Movement and Performance was created with the intention of providing clients with the tools to succeed with an individualized plan of care in order to get them to return to the activities that they enjoy most.

Staying true to our why has allowed us to grow within the South Florida community as one of the top healthcare providers, giving long-term solutions to clients feeling better and moving better!

Whether you’ve never been to a PT or are looking for a more personalized approach to your healthcare, you’ve come to the right place for your rehabilitation needs. Our approach emphasizes improving movement and function utilizing a variety of different strategies and techniques. At PMP we take pride in providing individualized healthcare services. We tailor your treatment to your individual situation, movement limitations, and activity requirements. This is done by performing a comprehensive examination and reassessments to determine how you respond to each treatment session.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
With any business, there are always obstacles and challenges along the way. The most powerful thing we have found is the insurance barrier.

The current insurance-based and medical model will tell you that you can only be fixed by pills, injections, a cookie-cutter approach to therapy, or surgery. It is our goal to show clients that there is another way and the true definition of health care.

Third-party payers (insurance) pressuring for immediate diagnoses, waiting for authorization, insisting on restricting treatments, and interrupting the quality therapy we want to provide; this ends up hurting YOUR progress and wastes more of YOUR time. Instead, it is our goal to focus on impairments versus a “diagnosis” that does not indicate the root cause of why the issue came about it the first place.

Initially, this was a barrier in regards to changing the communities perception of why we choose to be out of network with insurance or third-party payers; however, after educating the public on how they can help themselves and actually achieving the outcomes, they were looking for we have gained the trust of the community as the top providers for providing long-lasting solutions.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Dr. Eric Otero is South Florida’s leading physical therapist who provides quality, safe, and cost-effective services to athletes and patients of all levels.

Dr. Otero founded Pinnacle Movement and Performance with the vision of helping active adults and athletes get back to the workouts/sports with the quality of care they deserve. The current healthcare system focuses on quantity or how many patients can be seen in a day versus how well are the services being rendered to the clients.

The needs of someone who is an active adult are much different than that of everyone else and simply “resting or stopping what you are doing” is not a good enough answer. Our bodies are complex, and they deserve to be met with the attention to get down to the root causes of issues.

Having experience with professional and recreational athletes, Eric knows in order to get back to the things you love most and perform to the highest level as an athlete it takes someone who is dedicated to you. This is what Dr. Eric Otero firmly believes and what drives his practice with the client being his top priority.

Dr. Eric received his Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Nova Southeastern University and his Bachelor’s in Athletic Training from the University of Central Florida. Throughout Dr. Otero’s career, he has had the opportunity to work with many athletes/teams including the University of Maryland’s track and field team, Olympic athletes, and the USSSA Pride Professional softball team. Dr. Otero has also worked in a variety of orthopedic settings and specializes in treating musculoskeletal disorders, gait and balance disorders, and various neurological conditions.

Dr. Otero is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, a certified Titleist Performance Institute level I golf fitness instructor, certified in utilizing McKenzie Method for treating the lumbar spine, has received extensive training utilizing the Selective Functional Movement Assessment, and administers the Graston technique to aid in treating musculoskeletal disorders. Most recently Dr. Otero became board-certified by the American Physical Therapy Association in Orthopedic Physical Therapy in 2019.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was always a curious kid being trying to understand the “why” to many things. I was given the nickname of Curious George from my parents as I was always exploring or inquiring about school, sports, or places we would visit. This curiosity stayed with me all along my childhood to present day in regards to questioning how we can better to serve clients on a daily basis.

Always being involved in sports growing up my first injury occurred from tearing my hamstring in a 400m sprint in high school. Having a significant injury like that that literally took me away from not only competing but interfering with my day-to-day life it piqued my interest as to why the injury happened and then what to do to help myself get back to running.

I spent every day in the athletic training room asking the athletic trainer what I could do to get better and how to expedite the process. At the same time, I was taking Anatomy so combining the two worlds in regards to my own personal injury and learning about the body is what got me into the healthcare profession.
