Rising Stars: Meet Epiphany Avatara of Miami / South Florida

Today we’d like to introduce you to Epiphany Avatara.

Epiphany, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
From a young age I knew I was passionate about three things; the arts, science, and entrepreneurship. From having full blown concerts and fashion shows in my living room, to selling candy at school, to submitting essays that were never assigned and written simply for the love of it… I’ve always been a very passionate and productive person.

I got my start with performance by joining my middle school dance team, which led to joining my highschool majorette dance team. This is where I first picked up the clarinet since the majorette team was a part of the band, and I’d always wanted to take musicianship seriously. My dance and clarinet skills took me to Florida A&M University on scholarship with the Marching 100, as I studied and graduated with my degree in Agricultural Sciences.

Now as an adult with free will, I continue to pursue my passions intensely. I’m currently working as a Microbiologist, while pursuing my endeavors in music, fashion, and content creation. I kinda feel like Hannah Montana, haha!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The journey to where and who I am now was not smooth by any means. I’ve struggled with poverty, homelessness, mental health issues, lack of support, sabotage, and every other obstacle you could pull out of the hat. Through it all, one thing I never gave up on was myself and God. Even when I thought I had given up, I surprised myself with the amount of subconscious perseverance I have at my disposal. Understanding that God has a greater purpose for my life, and it’s all up to me to reach out and grab it, keeps me motivated to be present in my life and to aspire for all the things I’ve ever dreamt of. I always say, if I’ve already seen the worse life has to offer, why would I be so silly as to give up before I see the best? Life is always full circle.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a multi-creative, my artistry spans across music, performance arts, modeling, and fashion. I’m currently an independent music artist who mainly does rap music in various subgenres. I love to play around with different styles, flows, and tapping into different mediums for inspiration.

In terms of fashion, I am a crochet artist and building my brand Kyann’s Peace based off my one-of-one handmade clothing designs. I make everything from accessories, staples pieces, custom creations, to high fashion designs. All of my work is intended to be standout, mainly through exaggerating dimensions and thoughtful embellishment. I love to make people say “wow, I never thought of wearing a piece like THAT!”

The thread between all these ventures is for sure my content creation. Besides the joy and pride I feel in developing more as an overall artist (which I’ve been doing quite rapidly if I can toot my own horn), I feel so satisfied by the growth I’ve seen on my social platforms. This time last year I was barely scratching 3k followers on Instagram, now I’m closely approaching 13k just by one day saying “hm, I’m always posting funny stuff on my close friends. I wonder how people would like it if I posted it on my main feed!” From that day on I realized people actually think I’m really funny and enjoy the unhinged things I have to say!

What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is being open. My whole life I’ve dealt with crippling anxiety, especially as a young neurodivergent black woman. I’ve always felt like I was foreign in any room I walked in, almost like an alien trying to pretend like I am a human, and that I understand why we’re all pretending and playing these social games. When in reality I was just masking who I really was, from the pains of being bullied and outcasted my whole adolescence.

In recent years I’ve learned the most powerful thing you could be is yourself. Being authentic is the only way to finally find true freedom and peace in this life. So to me, being open is the most important thing, it’s the only way to allow love inside your life, That’s how I’ve learned to build my confidence, find my people, and connect with others who find this journey of mine to be inspiring!
