Rising Stars: Meet Ebony Mackey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ebony Mackey.

Ebony Mackey

Hi Ebony, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started our Brand PlayHardLookDope with my Husband in 2017 after a 5-year short career in NYC nightlife/hospitality.

It was not planned at all and when I was presented with the opportunity I was very hesitant but only for a short while. I had no background in Business so I had to learn as I went. And, I’m still learning.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road at all. I think for me the hard ways find me quicker than the easy road. It has been a complete uphill battle with very very little reward. Some of the struggles, in the beginning, were having to learn coding and how to code and design an e-commerce website.

That was one of the biggest challenges. I had no idea what I was doing and it was going to be a real thing that people were going to experience and use online so I had to learn it. Another challenge was learning to remove emotion from business and I’m still learning that.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
On my side of things, I am the creative director for sure. I’m the one making all the decisions on how the brand looks online and its relation to the public.

I coordinate all of our product shoots and lifestyle shoots. I am the one creating all the social media content daily and I’m the one who designed our website and has launched almost one thousand products online.

Do you have any advice for those just starting?
I wish I knew how hard it was going to be and how thankless it can be.

To be honest I know that’s harsh but it’s true it is very isolating and the support doesn’t always come from friends and family but more so the community you build online. Half of what you do for your business is going to be something you don’t want to do but you have to remember why you started.
