Rising Stars: Meet Dr. Melissa Sonners of Miami Dade

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Melissa Sonners

Hi Dr. Melissa, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m a woman who, like many woman out there lost myself. I forgot who I was amidst the busy-ness (haha business) of life, raising kids etc. I thought I was doing my best to incorporate some “self care” when in reality it was just another to -DO item on my never ending list. I burnt out and got really sick. I struggled to take care of our 6,4 and 1 year old and could hardly find my way to our office to work. I literally lost my mind. It was really scary. But looking back this is one of the greatest things that ever happened FOR me. It forced me to figure out ways to actually take care of myself that are realistic for a busy woman. That focus less on a “to-DO” and are more about who I BE. This changed everything for me. I now replace the term “self care” with self Connection and have created easy roadmaps, tools and resources (many of them are free) for women that are perhaps struggling with carving out time for themselves amidst the busy-ness of life. I help women make 5 minute shifts that change everything.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not. I realized I needed to start establishing more boundaries for myself and it’s funny what happens when you do that. Anyone who benefited from your lack of boundaries definitely gets upset. My circle has changed a bit. My husband honestly even struggled at first as I was carving out more quiet time for myself to get to know who I was again before I let society tell me who I was supposed to be. It took a lot of trust and support on his part to watch me change and evolve and know that I was still madly in love with him.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am super passionate about helping women establish a morning RHYTHM (rather than routine) that can take as little as 5 minutes. We focus on tools that reset the nervous system, I walk them through any challenges or barriers (kids, pets, work, etc) and make subtle shifts that create huge positive impact. I also have an online book club for women. I used to think I never had enough time to read, and I hear that from many women. But honestly, it’s amazing how much we unknowingly distract ourselves out of these pockets of time that we actually DO have. We fill every moment with a task, a to-do, doing something for somebody else. A book is a gateway to connection and it’s incredible what happens when you start to have a good book with you. You stop picking up your phone every break you have out of habit and instead lose yourself (FIND yourself actually) in a book. This is currently a community of 1k women. We focus on transformational non fiction books and I bring in the author for a community call at the end of the month after reading book together. It’s like a village, community and mastermind all in one!

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love this city. We moved from NJ a couple of years ago. Here there is the hustle and bustle of city but the people here are more artistic, more creative and connected. Tapped into living healthy and more consciously, at least in the circles I spend time in. I think it’s bc we live by the ocean and are connected to nature 365 days a year (no winter cabin fever). I love the acro community, the drum circle. I see people playing like kids well into adulthood. I swear the fountain of youth exists here in Miami. May we all continue to play as we age. In my mind it’s the best “anti-aging” vitamin out there!
