Rising Stars: Meet Darian Mederos of Miami

Today we’d like to introduce you to Darian Mederos.

Darian Mederos

Hi Darian, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I grew up in Santa Clara, Cuba, where art wasn’t really on my radar at first. My life was mostly about sports, especially swimming, which taught me discipline. But somehow, art kept sneaking in – little sketches here and there. Eventually, I realized this quiet passion was a lot more meaningful, so I took the leap into art full-time. Moving to Havana was a big shift, exposing me to a broader art world that captivated me.

Miami became my home next, and I spent a decade diving into its vibrant art scene, really focusing on developing my style in hyperrealism. The resources here were amazing – materials, models, endless inspiration – all of which pushed me to fully commit. Recently, I’ve been spending time in Córdoba, Spain, with Rafael Lorca, my manager and close friend. We’re excited about exploring Europe together and have some major exhibitions lined up internationally for 2025. It’s been a journey of constant growth and staying true to what I believe in artistically.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s definitely been a rocky road, with every bump adding something essential to my growth. Back in Cuba, getting art materials and resources wasn’t easy, and access to global trends was limited. Even in Havana, where I started studying formally, creative freedom was restricted. Moving to Miami felt like a leap into the unknown. I worked as a waiter and alongside an ironworker to support myself while pursuing art, which was tough and filled with self-doubt, but it built resilience.

One of the biggest challenges has been finding my balance between academic art, and my desire to express raw emotion freely. It takes courage to break the “rules” and embrace imperfection. Picasso influenced me in this; he mastered technique, then transcended it. I’ve come to value artistic freedom and to let my work evolve beyond convention.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
People know me for my hyperrealistic work, but what I’m most proud of is evolving to a place where I can balance technical skill with greater artistic freedom.

I started to move away from strict hyperrealism, feeling a need for more creative exploration. By increasing brush sizes and allowing myself to work in smaller, abstract sections, I could bring a new energy to my compositions. The bubble wrap effect became the perfect iconography to support this, offering a controlled abstraction that, like pixels, forms a cohesive image when viewed as a whole.

This shift has allowed me to retain realism while embracing a personal freedom that feels essential to my art.

What makes you happy?
Creating art brings me the most happiness. There’s something deeply satisfying about starting with a blank canvas and gradually building a story. Art is my way of sharing my inner world, capturing emotions that would otherwise go unsaid. This happiness comes from feeling connected to others, knowing that my work resonates with people. The process itself is peaceful, and each piece I create brings a sense of purpose.
