Today we’re excited to be connecting with Bj Royster again. If you haven’t already, we suggest you check out our prior conversation with them here.
Bj , thanks for joining us again. Just to level set a bit for folks who may have missed our last interview together, can you briefly introduce yourself?
Born and raised in Miami, Crandon Park and the Everglades were my playgrounds.
I was surrounded by the vibrant and diverse ecosystems of South Florida. From an early age, I felt a deep connection to the natural world, which shaped my love for the environment and inspired my future endeavors.
My underwater explorations unveiled a hidden world of vibrant colors and intricate marine life. The reefs, with their stunning biodiversity, became my muse. Inspired by the vivid corals and the graceful movements of the sea creatures, I began to capture their essence on canvas.
Being recognized as the foremost painter of the Florida Reefs was beyond my dream and now a reality. This recognition not only validated my passion but also allowed me to share the beauty and significance of the underwater world with a wider audience. Through exhibitions and collaborations, my artwork has become a powerful medium for raising awareness about the fragility of coral reefs and the urgent need for their conservation.
As a self-taught artist my journey has been one of constant learning and growth.
Today, I find myself reflecting on the journey that brought me here, from the sunlit shores of Crandon Park to the mysterious waters of the Everglades. The path was filled with discovery, inspiration, and an unwavering dedication to the natural world. Whether teaching a new generation of artists or diving into the cerulean depths to seek new subjects, every day is a testament to the boundless wonders of our planet.
Great, so let’s jump into an update on what you have been up to since we last spoke. What can you share with us?
In 2021, I closed “BJ Royster Ocean Gallery” in Islamorada, I moved to a small town, Milton located in the panhandle of Florida northeast of Pensacola.
The transition was significant, moving from the bustling, tourism-driven atmosphere of the Keys to the tranquil and somewhat secluded environment of Milton. This small town, with its quaint charm and slower pace of life, offered a different kind of solace and inspiration.
Closing the gallery was not easy.
It meant leaving behind a space filled with memories, creativity, and a supportive community. The gallery had not only been a place to showcase my work but also a haven where the beauty of the ocean and friendships resonated deeply within the walls.
In many ways, the move to Milton has been a journey of self-discovery and artistic evolution. It has reinforced my belief that art reflects one’s surroundings and experiences, and that true inspiration can be found in the most unexpected places. As I look to the future, I am excited to see how my work will continue to evolve and how I can give back to the community that has so warmly embraced me.
Ultimately, my journey is a testament to the enduring power of art and its ability to transform and uplift both the creator and the observer. It is a reminder that new beginnings, though often challenging, can lead to profound growth and fulfillment. And so, with each brushstroke, I celebrate the beauty of this new chapter, fully embracing the endless possibilities that lie ahead.
