Rising Stars: Meet Alfonso Apodaca III

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alfonso Apodaca III.

Hi Alfonso, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born into art with my mom being an artist and my sister being a fashion designer. I loved creating art when I was young. For over twenty years, I have had a career specializing in medical illustrations and interactive mediums.

I have been the artist on several murals around Dallas, Texas most notably those in the historic Deep Ellum, as well as murals in Cocoa Beach, Fl. I now live full-time in Cocoa Beach, Florida where I focus my art on commissions, murals, hyperrealistic charcoal, and graphite drawings, as well as acrylic paintings.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
A struggle for myself and all artists is when I am hit with “artist block”. But once I am out of it I persevere and come up with many pieces to create.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I have been a medical legal illustrator for the past twenty-two years, which has given me the opportunity to draw the human anatomy for medical legal court cases and illustrate for movies as well as in medical journals. My specialties include hyperrealistic charcoal drawings, as well as blocked art and murals.

I am known for my great detail in my hyper-realistic charcoal drawings, as well as my original blocked art having hidden images in some pieces. I also incorporate augmented reality into some of my art pieces making things come alive. My favorite thing is to see people’s faces when I have finished a commission piece for them. My broad spectrum of using several skilled mediums sets me apart from other artists.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My advice is to never give up and to stay true to your art.
