Rising Stars: Meet Alexandra Rey of MIAMI

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandra Rey.

Hi Alexandra, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Art has always been my way of making sense of the world. I started drawing and painting as a child, and over time it became not just something I did, but who I am. Although I studied Fashion Design, my true calling was always art. I’m a self-taught artist, and my journey has been shaped by years of exploration, persistence, and an obsessive dedication to my craft.

Over the past two decades, I’ve built a career creating paintings and drawings that reflect the beauty, tragedy, and complexity of our world. My work has been shown in galleries across the U.S. and featured in various publications, but what truly matters to me is the act of creation itself, the challenge, the emotion, and the hope that my art might move or inspire someone else.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road at all, but I think that’s part of what makes my story real. My path as an artist has been filled with uncertainty, self-doubt, and moments where I truly didn’t know if I could keep going. Being self-taught meant learning everything through trial and error, often with no guidance and no guarantees.

There were times when I felt invisible, when the struggle to balance art and survival felt overwhelming. But somehow, art always pulled me back, it’s the one thing that has never abandoned me. Every challenge has pushed me to grow, to trust my intuition, and to keep creating even when it hurt. Looking back, those difficult moments gave my work its depth and my life its meaning.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a visual artist specializing in paintings and drawings that explore the beauty, tragedy, and complexity of our world. My work often balances emotion with a quiet sense of strength; some pieces are deeply introspective, while others make bold social statements. I’m known for my expressive use of color and symbolism and for transforming difficult subjects into something poetic and thought-provoking.

What I’m most proud of is that I never gave up on this path, even when it made no logical sense to keep going. Being an artist isn’t exactly the “practical” choice; it’s more like a beautiful obsession that takes over your life. (I say that with love and a touch of humor.)

What sets me apart, I think, is honesty and purpose. I don’t create to impress; I create to connect. Each painting is a dialogue about humanity, resilience, and the search for beauty even in struggle. My greatest hope is that my work moves people in a way words sometimes can’t.

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is truth; emotional, human truth. The kind that can’t be hidden behind appearances or softened by comfort. I believe art has the power to reveal that truth, to confront what’s painful, and to transform it into something meaningful and even beautiful.

As someone who has seen both the beauty and the brutality of life, I’ve learned that art isn’t just about making something pretty; it’s about saying something honest. For me, art is about connection, about remembering that we’re all part of this big, beautiful world, with its light and its darkness, its fragility and strength. My greatest hope is that my work moves people in a way words sometimes can’t.
