Rising Stars: Meet Alberto Checa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alberto Checa.

Alberto Checa

Hi Alberto, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I came to the US from Cuba when I was 10 years old. Since then, I’ve been in different art schools and working a variety of jobs around Miami. I would pick up anything from designing signs for small businesses around Miami to construction and maintenance on boats.

I think my discipline is what got me here, I try to better myself every day and try to offer the most that I can to anyone I encounter. I’m now a resident artist at Oolite on Miami Beach until the end of the year where I currently have a solo exhibition up on the second-floor gallery.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not a smooth road. It’s probably been the complete opposite. But I try to see the positive in it all, and without it, I probably wouldn’t be here. So I wouldn’t even consider their struggles, just another blessing that I have to dissect and patiently seek for the hidden lessons within.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My work deals with ritual, obsession, habituation, and process. It’s an attempt at building a world of cyclical tasks that showcase the futile labor of the working class within the United States, emphasizing the materiality and choreographies that exist in the city of Miami. I’m most proud of the fact that I’m still here. Being an artist hasn’t been the easiest path but I can’t see myself living without it.

I think what sets me apart is that I’m always trying to stay true to myself and put out work for myself and not necessarily for an audience. I think by doing so I am doing the best thing I probably can for my audience.

How do you define success?
Freedom.
