We’re looking forward to introducing you to Rafael Ryan Alfonso Olivera. Check out our conversation below.
Rafael Ryan, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: Who are you learning from right now?
Right now I’m learning from the The Master Rick Rubin, reading his book “The Creative Act: A way of being” and many advance tutorials of music production
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello friends of Voyage Miami Magazine, it’s an honor to be with you again, and thank you for the invitation to share part of my story. I’m Ryan (CU), a Cuban artist based in Miami. I’m a DJ, producer, record label owner, event manager, and electronic music radio host. I specialize in progressive house and its derivatives.
My brand is my own record label called “La Cura de la Semana,” launched in 2020 with distribution by Proton Soundsystem. We offer spiritually based music with an intense emotional charge, featuring artists from Cuba and around the world.
The special and unique touch is that we love music, and our goal is to bring it to the forefront it deserves. To achieve this, we curate our album releases with exquisite, soul-healing touches. We’re working hard to continue releasing music and strengthening live performances in the United States and around the world.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
I always remember listening to music. I have several anecdotes that made me feel proud, like experiencing songs in a different way, getting inside the creator’s ideas and trying to decipher sound codes, tempo, rhythms. That makes you different, and you feel the power granted by the universe. I remember one time I was at home with friends and went to my room, switched from one tape deck to another, and the kids didn’t understand, but I took the risk that others wouldn’t, and that made me feel empowered.
When did you last change your mind about something important?
I’m one of those people who should do what I think, believing strongly in my intuition. I’ll never forget this action: before going to university, I could have started over and chosen a better career. Today I have a degree in foreign languages as well as an artist. What I do know is that you should never stray from your path, whether it’s the one you chose or the one the universe gave you. Patience is the first virtue and skill you should practice, in addition to being aware of time and space in all spheres of life. Resilience is the key!
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
I consider myself a kind-hearted person because my parents raised me very well, and they still do! I show a lot of respect for people and I respect music a lot. The ego is the greatest enemy of human beings, as it is their nemesis, and cultural values are often lost. Treating others with respect in all circumstances will make it reciprocal, and you will receive everything in return.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
Building something and working towards growth is incredible. I think people will remember my record label, “La Cura,” as a healing weapon of resistance. Many will understand the concept, and future generations will feel that our work was done from the heart. That would be a great legacy. I feel in peace with the music, in family or dancefloor, this is my creed.
