We’re looking forward to introducing you to Rachel Farmer. Check out our conversation below.
Rachel, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
In a recent yoga class, a new student let me know before the class that he was completely new to yoga and feeling a a little nervous and unsure what to expect. I assured him that it was going to be a good experience and that all he had to do was breathe and listen to his body. At the end of the class, he came up to me and asked if he could hug me. He said that he felt so good and that the class changed his life- he now loved yoga. I was really proud of him for being open to allow himself to experience the practice and was so happy to hear he felt the benefits. I feel that same pride for all of my students because stepping onto your yoga mat is always something to feel proud of.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, my name is Rachel Farmer, and I am the owner of Rachel Farmer Wellness, a holistic health brand offering yoga and holistic health coaching. Before becoming a business owner, I’ve always been a lover of health, science, wellness, and movement, which originally led me to becoming a physician assistant.
From a young age, I knew I had a deep desire to help people and was fascinated by science. Initially, I pursued the idea of becoming a doctor, but as I learned more about the path, I realized that becoming a physician assistant (PA) would offer me the flexibility I valued. I was looking for a better work-life balance, the ability to change specialties, and the opportunity to practice medicine without the extensive schooling and financial burden associated with being a doctor. It seemed like it would be a great fit.
Before diving into PA school, I began working remotely with Arbonne, a health and wellness company, and discovered a growing passion for helping people improve their health through lifestyle changes. Although I continued my studies and earned my masters in medical science to become a PA, it became clear that my true passion lay in areas outside of traditional medicine, which typically focused on medication management and surgery. I found myself more drawn to exploring lifestyle changes and educating others on nutrition, non-toxic products, and sustainable, holistic health.
After working as a PA-C in dermatology, I quickly burned out from the fast-paced nature of seeing many patients each day. I craved more time to educate and connect with my patients, realizing that I had more to offer, and I also craved more time for myself. That internal calling to explore a different path grew louder, and I decided to take a step back to re-evaluate how I could make a different impact.
That’s when I decided to take a leap of faith and travel to Bali in February 2024 to attend a 200-hour yoga teacher training. It was there that I discovered a new, powerful way to help people, not just through the physical body, but by connecting the body, mind, and spirit. The experience ignited a deep sense of purpose within me, and I felt an alignment that I had been missing for a while. I felt a level of excitement and fulfillment I hadn’t experienced in a clinical setting. Yoga, breathwork, and philosophy became tools I wanted to share with others to help them on their own wellness journeys.
As I began teaching yoga, I also broadened my knowledge my holistic knowledge by earning my health coaching certification through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. I founded Rachel Farmer Wellness as a platform to serve clients both on and off the mat, and my business is rooted in the belief that true wellness encompasses not just the body, but also the mind and spirit. Through holistic health coaching, yoga, and my ongoing partnership with Arbonne, I help people transform their lives by educating them on sustainable, natural wellness practices.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
As a young child I grew up swimming competitively. I spent hours and hours in the pool, swimming back and forth. I loved it, but it was also monotonous to swim so much. However, I remember that first race I won, the feeling of all those hours of practice and laps truly paying off, and remember feeling powerful.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
There have been many times when giving up has crossed my mind. I remember the first college exam I took was a biology 101 exam. I had taken AP biology in high school and had paid attention to the lectures, so I assumed I didn’t really need to study. Well, my high C definitely rocked that theory, and I was devastated because I was a straight A student. I went to my advisor to talk about how to improve from here, and I was told that maybe science wasn’t my strength and to re-evaluate wanting to enter into medicine. This was really tough to hear. Honestly I thought about giving up then, but I dug deep and learned from my mistakes instead. I ended the class with an A, and more importantly, became a practicing medical provider, despite the hesitations from my college advisor.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
I think that they would say quality time and just time in general. One of the biggest reasons I love owning my business is the time flexibility that it gives me by allowing me to set my schedule and own my time, for the most part. And then with that time, I am really intentional on how I spend it, exploring new hobbies, reading and learning, being with friends and family, or connecting with others.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope that people tell a story of someone who was kind and inviting. I hope it’s one that highlights the type of heart I had and focuses on my intent to always bring more light, love, and happiness into the world.
