Oleg Mamedov of Hallandale Beach on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Oleg Mamedov. Check out our conversation below.

Oleg, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
I think people often misunderstand that filmmaking is not just about pressing a button or owning a good camera. Many believe it’s fast and easy, but in reality, it takes days of preparation, planning, teamwork, and long nights of editing.

What’s also misunderstood is that the work doesn’t stop when the shoot ends. Post-production can take even more time and energy than filming itself. It’s not just about making things ‘look nice’ — it’s about telling a story the right way. That part, most people don’t see.”**

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My work is not about filming weddings, events, or parties. What I do is create image films, music videos, and narrative projects. It’s very different from trend-based, stamped-out videos.

My approach is closer to cinema – every project is individual, and no two are alike. Each client becomes the hero of their own story, and I bring that to life on screen. Of course, I have my own style, and people notice it – just like a painter’s brushstroke, a director’s signature, or the design of a Rolex.

I see it as a gift to have a recognizable style, and I always focus on making every piece not just professional, but truly unique.”

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
As a kid, like many boys, I first dreamed of becoming an astronaut. Later I wanted to be a surgeon, then even a veterinarian. But throughout my childhood I loved drawing, and I was actually good at it – my work was even shown in exhibitions.

Maybe that’s why I got interested in looking through a camera lens later on. At first it was photography – capturing everything around me. But soon I realized freezing a moment wasn’t enough. I wanted to see movement, to let the story keep unfolding. That’s how I found my way to the movie camera… and became a cinematographer.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would tell my younger self: don’t rush. Everything has its time. The right people, the right projects, the right opportunities — they will all come. Just keep working with honesty and passion, and don’t lose yourself trying to please everyone

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
I’d say Matthew McConaughey — because he’s real, grounded. Tarantino — for the way he never bends his vision. Joaquin Phoenix — that raw honesty in everything he does. And then there’s my friend, Russian actor Andrey Sviridov. Fame or no fame, his loyalty and strength of character impress me the most. For me, it’s always about who people are, not what they have.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Have you ever gotten what you wanted, and found it did not satisfy you?
“Yes, that has happened. Sometimes you put your heart into a project, but the final result doesn’t fully match the vision you had in your head. At first it can feel disappointing, but I’ve learned that even in those moments there’s always a lesson, always something good to take away. Every project has its strong sides and its weak ones – that’s the nature of our work. And in the end, if the audience accepts it and it speaks to them, then it has fulfilled its mission, even if I personally would have done
