Today we’d like to introduce you to Yule Nunez.
Yule, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am one of the co-founders of Santo Dulce! – Santo Dulce! is a family owned business within my wife Laura and brother in law Mario.
I am a marketing strategist and content creator with an entrepreneurship soul, and after reaching a point of life when I ‘felt’ ready, Laura encourages me to follow our dream of owning a small business, and I called Mario to join us into this adventure.
We have been churros lovers, is part of our Hispanic heritage. My first job in the US was for a family-owned churro store. So churros are a big part of my life. It was Mario’s first job in the US too.
After living in the Downtown/Edgewater area for over five years with Laura, we’ve seen a blossoming of artisanal dessert shops, traditional desserts presented in unconventional ways. We always had that little voice saying “There is not a single churro shop around this area”. When the entrepreneurship world knocks my door, food trucks are one of the “easiest” ways to start a small business. Funny fact, every time we traveled around the US we had to try churros (since we love them) and they were not good. We always came back home telling this story.
A couple weeks after doing market research, and meeting brainstorming with Mario several times, we decided that our project was going to be with that one thing we knew how to make and we love… churros!
But our project wasn’t going to be based on traditional churros, we knew we had to take it to next level to engage our generation. We started playing with different shape for the churros, with several flavors, mixing out latin flavors to it too! But the real magic started we tried churros with ice cream, immediately we knew that we had something special cooking, everyone loves churros… and ice cream too!
Santo Dulce! was born, in a food truck form and the rest is history, we’ve been traveling with our truck all around south Florida, participating in different food truck festivals. It is not an easy job, but we love it, especially being able to craft smiles and be part of everlasting moments our customers are having with their families, and that’s all that matter.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Is not easy owning a food truck, there is a lot logistical work behind the scenes. People may have the misconception that since it is ‘small’ is not a lot of work and is completely the opposite.
At the beginning was also very hard to get into the food truck festivals, very few people were willing to help us giving us a spot, but for those who did – we will be forever thankful with them.
Santo Dulce! – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I’m the brain behind the Brand Identity, I currently create daily content for the brand, marketing, PR and social media.
Mario is our churro Ninja, he is always at the truck making sure our every single customer receives the best Halo (churro in a halo shape) or Santo Sundae, meeting our standards of quality. We take the churro and Santo Dulce! experience very seriously.
Laura is a MD but when she is working at the truck, she always making sure that the customer experience over-all is smooth and a fun one!
Tell us about your favorite and least favorites things about our city.
Miami is the best city to live! and I meant it. The possibilities here are endless. I love how you can find everything that you can think of here. From the laidback Wywnood style, all the way to the fancy design district breeze. Feeling tired of the routine? You can take a quick break and look for the ocean, the beach is just right there.
Personally, summer is one of the hardest times of the year for me, I love doing a lot of outdoors activities (not to mention that working at the truck is one of them haha) and the heat and humidity are very very intense. Last year, our first summer working at the truck, Mario and I were consistently sick, dehydrated, almost fainting at the end of the day. Now we laugh when we think about it, but is really challenging to work in a truck with those high temperatures.
