Meet Yanni De Melo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yanni De Melo.

Yanni De Melo’s journey with photography began at the age of 16 when he enrolled in the commercial photography technical course at McFatter Technical Center in Davie, FL. After exploring the depths of the black and white darkroom, studio lighting, and the wonders of Adobe, he knew that there was more to learn and wanted to continue his education at University.

Taking a three year break from University after the first semester of his Junior Year, Yanni gained interest in Yoga, Meditation, and Spiritual Philosophy; he began a yoga practice that would eventually bring him to India in for three months in 2015. Coming back from that world and gaining new sources of inspiration, Yanni made the decision to go back to school and finish his degree with a fresh set of eyes.

Walking out with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts for Photography at Barry University in Miami, Florida in 2018, Yanni has underwent several projects and publications since. His work has been featured in Ocean Drive Magazine, Haute Living, HOLA!USA, CHIC Miami Magazine, Elléments Magazine, Picton Magazine, and Elegant Magazine. He has rendered services for iHeart Radio, Front Management, and Next Models.

Yanni is a firm believer in how important it is to capture the essence of the narrative that’s being told in front of his lens. Energy plays a pivotal role in the production and post-production of the project, which will result in the outcome of the images that are being produced, hence delivering the objective and message of the project.

In the end, this medium has the ability to open the public minds and hearts to new possibilities, concepts, and ideologies. Yanni’s goal is to evolve in this incredible craft, to expand as an individual, and augment his role as a photographer.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
In order to follow a goal and you must undergo struggles in order to troubleshoot and manifest possibilities. There are hard times and there are great times, and the benefit of contrast is using that as inspiration for my projects and make it into something beautiful. Some struggles can be found consistent freelance work, investing in quality equipment, honing your craft and always updating your portfolio. Patience is needed to find the right opportunities and the more that you put into this energetically. It will begin to pay off sooner or later if you are consistent.

Please tell us about your work.
I am a Portrait, Fashion, Lifestyle, Movement, and Product Photographer based in South Florida. I have a lot of inspiration, from life experiences to books and film, that fortunately helps me keep busy. What sets me aside is my creative drive and expectation to always learn something new – whether it be in a technical sense or a creative sense. I try to always look for areas of improvement – while maintaining a positive outlook that everything will work out in the end.

What I most proud of is the rapid growth of my projects and witnessing connections and events unraveling as time goes on. Some of my more favorite shots, reflecting on them, is the feeling of accomplishment between my team members and me – that’s the best feeling in the world.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I probably would have would be wanted to learn certain expectations and guidelines on how to find my way in the fashion photography industry. I am still learning.
