Today we’d like to introduce you to Will Medina.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My journey as a Travel Agency owner started in 2009 when I started the company as a “side hustle” while going to school and working full time. However, my love for travel and hospitality started much earlier than that. I was born on the gorgeous beach of Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic.
Thanks to my mother, I got to explore the beaches, resorts, and national attractions of my incredible country. No surprise: this is where my passion for exotic travel, beach lounging, and all things tequila comes from!
When I was 20, I went to Puerto Rico for a few months, then onto Milwaukee, WI, to spend (what was supposed to be) a year with my relatives. Let me tell you, the change from sun-warmed beaches to five-foot snowdrifts is a shock to the system – but that one year turned into ten years, and I fell for Milwaukee and its amazing people as I started to build my travel business. I fondly consider Milwaukee my second home and travel there frequently. In 2013, the sun and sand beckoned, and I headed south to Ft. Lauderdale and kept working on being a Destination Weddings Expert. My then-fiancé joined me, and in February 2017, we celebrated our wedding in style in the Riviera Maya.
I love this city and the community we have here. I’ve built my business into something I am deeply proud of: I get to work with brides and grooms from all over the country and help them create weddings that reflect their love, their commitment, their unique personal style, and their sense of adventure. It’s an amazing moment to be a part of people’s lives. I am Dominican born, with a second home in Wisconsin and now a forever home in Florida with my hubby and our dog Max. My work allows me to explore the world and share that joy with others. Who could ask for more?
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The journey has been rewarding but it definitely comes with many challenges. Building a company from scratch is never easy, especially online where you must face lots of competition, consistently build trust with new clients, and continue to evolve as the technology evolves. I would say the biggest challenge was learning to grow my mindset from side hustle to CEO of an established business. You have to work very hard for that discipline and resourcefulness.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Destination Weddings Expert – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
My passion and my jam are destination weddings. The combination of traveling as a group + celebrating a wedding is something I love so much and after years of working on craft and helping clients, the consistent feedback is that we do pretty damn good job at helping our couples and their guests remove the overwhelm from the group travel planning. I am most proud of building a company where we plan for clients whom we have never met and end up as friends. It’s a lot of fun to work with brides and grooms whom I can have fun and be human with. We are a very personal brand.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We continue to have steady growth year over year and we like it that way. Our approach is very boutique so our strategy is to continue to grow deeper with our clients and never losing that personal touch and hands-on experience that our brides and clients love.
