Today we’d like to introduce you to Whitney Thames.
Whitney, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
One Christmas while in college, my mother purchased me a mixer. Opening my gifts, I was curious as to why she purchased me a mixer being that I had never baked before. She told me she wanted me to try and make a pound cake because as her grandmother told her “a good ole scratch pound cake is the basics of bakin'”. A few months later, I made my first pound cake. I let my dad try the cake first (he’s my biggest critic), and he said it as better than the person that he usually purchases his pound cake from. That meant a lot to me coming from him. After that moment, I started to trial and error different flavored cakes. I always knew how to cook, but I never had someone in my family that baked so it was shocking to everyone that I was actually making quality products. Now that I had the foundation of baking down, Customers started to request more and more designs, and it caused me to expand my business and create a diverse array of cakes.
Has it been a smooth road?
When starting a business from scratch on your own, it can be very difficult. You are not only the business owner, you also wear the hat of the accountant, cake designer, secretary, marketing manager, and inventory specialist. Some days it can be very overwhelming and you just want to quit, but you must always remember the light at the end of the tunnel. I have a huge support system and when I need a helping hand, I can count on them always.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Keepin’ It Sweet story. Tell us more about the business.
