Today we’d like to introduce you to John Sory.
John, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In March 2018, I joined Vohra Wound Physicians as President after nearly 25 years of hands-on experience in healthcare management. Part of my role at Vohra Wound physicians is to manage Vohra’s core operations and key strategic initiatives.
Prior to joining Vohra, I helped lead the University of Miami Health System (UHealth) as the Chief Executive for UHealth Regional Alliance, where I used to oversee affiliations and expansion, health plan relationships, and new reimbursement models. I also led the organization’s entry into population health and the transformational steps from fee for service to value-based health outcomes. I contributed to expanding the health system through affiliations with physician groups, ACOs, employers, pharmacies, and foreign health entities. Prior to that role, I led Pfizer Health Solutions (PHS), a wholly-owned, global subsidiary of Pfizer Inc., which developed and sold health information technologies, designed employer-based health services, and operated risk-based population health programs across the U.S. and Europe.
I received my Master of Business Administration from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College and I earned my Bachelor of Administration from Vanderbilt University. Most recently, I also completed an executive management program at Harvard Business School.
Today, I am proud to be part of a team that delivers a comprehensive wound care offering through clinical services, wound care certification and niche-specific smart technology. Vohra’s care model has proven to deliver strong results, including a 21-day improvement in healing time, a 90% reduction in loss of limb, an 88% reduction in wound-related hospitalizations, and more than a $19,000 savings per wound episode.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
At Vohra, creating a novel and in-depth training program was of utmost priority, along with identifying physicians that are passionate and invested in treating wound care patients around the country. Therefore, recruiting physicians across the United States for a new telemedicine specialty at Vohra Wound Physicians was a challenge we encountered along the way.
Having as unique of a program as we do, competition and remaining on top of new technologies and methods of innovation are always a challenge. However, with the proper top-tier training, physicians and nurses can treat patients to the standard we have set and bring them to senior care facilities across the country. With a strong focus on patient-centered wound care and improved outcomes, it comes as no surprise that other organizations are attempting to adopt the same models Vohra Wound Care offers to its patients and compete in local markets. This fact, coupled with the changing reimbursement climate are two challenges we face where we depend on Vohra’s spirit of innovation to maintain our status as the nation’s most trusted wound care partner and provider.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
Founded in 2000, Vohra Wound Physicians is the largest wound care specialty practice focused exclusively on the post-acute sector, and the premier provider and employer in wound management. The company employs approximately 300 wound physicians, uses innovative, proprietary technologies, and provides improved wound healing to patients across the U.S. and beyond.
Vohra delivers comprehensive wound care by offering clinical services, wound care certification and niche-specific smart technology. Based on decades of experience, Vohra’s practical wound education program has been designed to help thousands of professionals deliver better clinical care and accelerate their careers. The program is a self-paced, online education and certification program giving nurses and healthcare professionals the opportunity to learn wound care principals directly from Vohra’s chief medical staff. The program allows nurses and healthcare professionals to earn a certification along with their annual Continuing Education credits and provides access to a worldwide professional community of wound physicians, nursing professionals and students.
In addition, the company provides care to hundreds of thousands of patients annually across 30 states and maintains strong partnerships with nearly 3,000 post-acute care facilities. Supported by proprietary technologies, proven outcomes data and sophisticated practice management, Vohra’s model delivers proven results, including a 21-day improvement in healing time, a 90% reduction in loss of limb, an 88% reduction in wound-related hospitalizations, and more than a $19,000 savings per wound episode. Vohra’s ONC-certified EHR was designed by physicians specifically for healing wounds in the post-acute care setting. Through clinical decision support (CDS) and artificial intelligence (AI), its extensive wound database supplies wound care specialists with optimal support to design and implement the best patient-specific treatment plans. We are proud of where we have taken wound care medicine and look forward to what the future has in store.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least about our city?
What I like best about Miramar is that it forms part of South Florida, an emerging hub for leading health care innovation across technology and its education. In recent years, top universities such as the University of Miami, Nova Southeastern University, Florida Atlantic University, and Florida International University have been continuously improving their medical curriculums and resident programs to ultimately develop a robust physician network in our market.
South Florida’s health tech community holds no shortage of innovators and we are thrilled to form part of this growing and evolving community.
Where do you see your industry going over the next 5-10 years? Any big shifts, changes, trends, etc.
8.2 million patients suffer from chronic wounds such as pressure ulcers, diabetic wounds, venous and arterial wounds. The number will grow with the inexorable rise of diabetes prevalence which already has reached 25 percent of the over 65+ population. The fastest growing segment is the 75+ age group. Wound care will be increasingly offered in a home setting where nearly six million people are treated for wounds. This number is on track to reach 9 million by 2025. Telemedicine will be increasingly adopted as an accessible, efficient form of care delivery. The reimbursement move from volume to value will favor organizations, like Vohra, with demonstrated results delivered efficiently and well-coordinated with the entire care team.
In addition, digital and mobile technologies continue to remain at the forefront of innovation within the healthcare industry due to their benefits and continued improvements to patient care. At Vohra Wound Physicians, we have kept a pulse on these innovations, and we’ve implemented them into our services ranging from our Vohra@Home wound management service to our effective electronic health record software.
Through Vohra@Home, patients can now readily access physician consultations to diagnose and provide treatment recommendations for all types of wounds. This includes, but is not limited to, commonly occurring pressure ulcers, diabetic foot wounds and venous ulcers. Since 2000, Vohra Wound Physicians has made it a point to remain ahead of the curve in its industry, in multiple ways. More than seven years ago, the company implemented telemedicine to expand the reach of high-quality wound care for Medicare patients in rural areas with limited healthcare access. In the COVID-19 period, Vohra recognized the need to eliminate barriers to patient access by providing flexibility, convenience, and real-time care for patients. We only foresee an increase in the use of telemedicine and a sense of normalcy to this relatively new dynamic.
