Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria Fregoso.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Photography has always been a part of my life one way or another. At age seven, I have gifted a Barbie Polaroid camera and for the rest of my childhood, it never left my side. Fast forward to Freshmen year: I joined my high school photo club, learned the ins and outs of photography from some of the best, and was even chosen to travel to New York City for a three-day workshop shop to train further with them. Then in college, I became a staff photojournalist for MDC’s The Reporter. There, I developed my eye for genuine emotion and truly learned what it means to tell an authentic story. I carry these experiences with me to every wedding and event. At the heart of it all, I started my business because I am a creative soul who is driven by aesthetics and the power of real human connection.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The most difficult aspect of my journey has been learning to manage both the creative and business areas of my life, simultaneously. Although I developed my photography skills over several years, I had to teach myself how to run a company from one day to the next. When I first started out to create VMF Photo + Films, I was only 18 years old and it was tough to be taken seriously by some clients and other seasoned wedding vendors. A select few welcomed me with open arms, and I am eternally grateful for being given the opportunity to thrive so early in my career. I had to teach myself every detail of running a company in order to be successful. Today, I do my own accounting, social media marketing, and networking with vendors on a day to day basis. Of course, at the beginning (and sometimes even today), I made my share of mistakes. But I didn’t allow myself to get discouraged. The struggles of running my company have been 100% worth it and if I could start over, I’d probably still do it all the same.
Please tell us about VMF Photo + Films.
I am a wedding and elopement photographer/videographer based in South Florida. First and foremost, I am a visual storyteller with a journalist’s heart. I specialize in both photography and videography, which I believe sets me apart from other wedding vendors. I am equally passionate about both mediums and truly believe they go hand in hand. In my work, I keep my couples true to themselves. My goal is to always depict love stories as authentically and genuinely as possible. I make it a point to ensure each moment I capture is grounded in reality, with no extra fluff or forced smiles. No cheesy prom pics or fake laughter here! 😉
I always take my time to get to know my couples. It is important I understand what is special about their relationship, so by the time their special day arrives I know exactly what it means to them and how they got here.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I’ve definitely learned a lot on my journey to where I am today, but each lesson has shaped me into the entrepreneur I am now. Because I started my company as a young adult, I had to learn to give myself grace whenever I got discouraged or messed up. Sometimes, I still have to just breathe and remember I am only human. If I could go back and do something differently, I would be less hard on myself and reach out for help when things get overwhelming. In the beginning, I think I was embarrassed to admit whenever I was wrong or simply didn’t know something, so I stopped myself from reaching out to other creatives for advice. I used to let myself get intimidated very easily. Now, I know that we are actually all in this together. I am so thankful to all of my fellow wedding vendors who have guided and shared their experiences with me. I learned that as artists, we need to continue to grow and evolve and there is no shame in that.
