Meet Vicente Wolf

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vicente Wolf.

Hi Vicente, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m a Cuban refugee. Starting in my late teens, I bounced around from job to job here in NY driven by a desire to find a career that suited me and my gifts.  I did not attend design school, in fact, I never went further than high school, in part because of my dyslexia.  I am entirely self-taught through reading, visiting museums, extensive travel and observing everything.  Truthfully, I have always found it a huge advantage not having to unlearn design principles and relearn my own aesthetic.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been a ride on a magic carpet. Starting in the early 1980’s I had the good fortune of being in the right place at the right time that has catapulted me into who I am today.  I will add that while the design process is one that I have honed with a passion, making it a successful business was a hard-learned lesson.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
What I do is an instinctual approach to blending periods and cultures in a modern environment that is elegant but comfortable and family friendly.  I travel to remote regions of the world annually that nourishes my soul as well as providing cultural objet d’arte that bring depth to my work.  I learned professional photography and shoot all my own projects.  Finally, I am passionate about supporting God’s Love We Deliver as a trustee.  They are a New York-based charity that provide home delivery of meals and assistance to medically fragile people.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
That has taken many years for my shrink to work out.  I’ve grown to understand that happiness comes from within and not from ones accomplishments.  However, seeing the transition from my initial mental image in designing a space to a completed job that makes the lifestyle of my clients better is such an enormous reward.
