Meet Trailblazer Karlyn Sullivan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karlyn Sullivan.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have been homeschooling our four children for 16 years and it has been an exciting journey. We have one daughter just graduated from college and is headed to NYC to work for Goldman Sachs. Our other two daughters are attending Auburn University and our son is a junior in high school. As our homeschool years are coming to a close, I was exploring what would be next for me. I began organically helping families years ago with all aspects of homeschooling, ranging from encouraging them in making the decision to begin their journey to learning how to successfully homeschool during the high school years. I have learned much for our experiences and have a great desire to help others. I started Homeschool U Consulting and am enjoying meeting clients and sharing what I have learned over the years. It is my greatest desire to encourage and come alongside families who desire this type of education for their children.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I had a slow start at first because I was afraid to put myself out there. I didn’t feel confident that what I had to share was beneficial and might not be well received. I forced myself to contact groups and offered to be their speaker for their gatherings and that has opened many doors. I started emailing blog posts and holding webinars. My website was being shared by others and people started calling! So many have questions when it comes to homeschooling and many feel inadequate. If I can show families how well they can educate their children, then I have done my job well. Homeschooling isn’t for everyone but it is an excellent educational option for families who want to do it. The desire to help and share what I’ve learned is so exciting to me!

Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I offer a multitude of services including choosing homeschool curriculum for students, setting schedules for families, creating high school transcripts, advising on dual enrollment, writing high school resumes, etc. Each family has different needs so I help in various areas. I receive great pleasure offering individualized and specialized services for each family I work with and love that I get to encourage them on their homeschool journey. I take on a limited number of clients so that I can be as available to my families as they would like. I think the fact that I’m accessible and available to my families sets me apart from others. My clients become my friends and when that happens, I know that I’ve done my job well. I want to see them not only survive educating their children but do it with excellence, joy, and great satisfaction.

Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
I have always been a self-starter and since middle school, I often find myself in leadership positions. I love anything that deals with organizing, coaching, encouraging and children! I love seeing challenging situations and figuring out solutions and ways to help. I get great satisfaction seeing people reach their goals and become excited about the progress they’re making as they feel their life becoming more focused and organized.
