Today we’d like to introduce you to Elise Kramer.
Elise, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Coming from a family of physicians, I always knew I wanted to be a doctor but it was when my mother developed a tumor behind one of her eyes that I took a specific interest in specializing in the eye. My Doctorate degree was awarded in Optometry from the Université de Montréal in 2012 where I received a grant from the Scholarship Program of the Québec Ministry of Education for short-term university studies outside of Québec. Receipt of this scholarship award is based on academic performance. In the summer of my second year, I participated in a humanitarian mission in Laayoune, Morocco where I helped hundreds of impoverished people by giving them free eye examinations and glasses corresponding as closely as possible to their prescription.
During my fourth year, I helped teach a course on slit-lamp use and ocular foreign body extraction to family medicine residents in Montreal. I then completed my internship in ocular disease at the Eye Centers of South Florida, where I worked with Dr. Dan and Dr. Hoffman and went on to complete my residency at the Miami VA Medical Center. My time there included training at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, the nation’s top eye hospital. After my residency, I became a fellow of the Scleral Lens Education Society. I am a member of the American Optometric Association and a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry. I strive to assist each patient with quality and advanced eye care whether he or she requires a basic eye exam or specialized eye or vision care.
“My practice has been devoted to the restoring quality vision and ocular comfort to those patients who have been affected by keratoconus, refractive surgical complications (ex: LASIK), corneal transplant surgery, eye trauma, chronic dry eyes, corneal dystrophies and degenerations, and many others. Most of my patients who have suffered from vision loss are now wearing custom-made contact lenses I have designed using advanced technology. The results are outstanding.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t know of any journey that does not have obstacles or challenges but attitude Is everything! I studied optometry in Canada and decided to move to the United States to specialize. I had to take a total of seven exams in order to work in the State of Florida — Canadian Boards, American Boards, and Florida Boards. And just when I thought I finally had managed to convert all my French optometry vocabulary to English, low and behold, I realized that in Miami, very many people do not speak English. Spanish is the number one language I speak at work now and I am happy to offer my services proficiently in five different languages. My advice would be: Believe in yourself and all that you are. Know that there is something greater inside you than any obstacle.
Alright – so let’s talk about your work. Tell us about Miami Contact Lens Institute – what should we know?
My practice has been devoted to the restoring quality vision and ocular comfort to those patients who have been affected by keratoconus, refractive surgical complications (ex: LASIK), corneal transplant surgery, eye trauma, chronic dry eyes, corneal dystrophies and degenerations, and many others. Most of my patients who have suffered from vision loss are now wearing custom-made contact lenses I have designed using advanced technology. The results are outstanding. My main specialty is working with scleral contact lenses. These are completely custom designed for the unique shape of each individual eye I work with. However, I also offer correction of vision without daytime contact lenses or surgery using orthokeratology, I offer prevention of myopia progression and I also design cosmetic and theatrical contact lenses for cosmetic changes or enhancements.
