Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Alexa.
Ashley, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Music runs in my family so it has been a part of me since I was a baby. I first hit the booth when I was 12 in Miami for my dad’s CD. As for modeling, my sister inspired me to do so around 13 years old and having my first photoshoot at 14. This is something I always had a passion for and became more consistent with my craft at 19.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No journey is easy. As a woman, it can be more difficult to pursue this kind of dream knowing how dangerous it can be. You have to make sacrifices and be more out there. Kind of like always having a “buddy system” everywhere you go. Photoshoots, events, meetings, etc. so you wouldn’t get taken advantage. My parents loved what I do, but didn’t like how I wanted to have it as my career. Yes, education is important, but I always follow my heart. I can’t give up what gives me the most freedom.
Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I’m more known as a model, singer, and dancer. I didn’t have the born gift of songwriting. It was something I had to learn independently throughout the years. It was one of the main reasons why I could finish my tracks. I became a lot better with them since I had more bumps in the road. I get most proud of small accomplishments. A step is a step. It still goes forward. I’ve learned to appreciate every moment of it. I am my own competition. I always strive to be better than yesterday. Not that girl on Instagram. Not that artist with a higher range than me. I love being different. I tend to stay that way.
We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
With women, things are more emotional. Whether they admit it or not. Feelings are always put first. That’s why it can be hard to have many women with different personalities and beliefs to grow at the same level A.K.A. “women empowerment.” Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for it. I love building with others. But there will be always some sort of competition or jealousy with a few if not, more. I believe that is one of the biggest barriers. We could all learn from each other when we go through certain situations that make us feel alone. Communication will always be key. If we set aside even our smallest insecurities and what-ifs, we could create a beautiful thing as an empire.
