Today we’d like to introduce you to Tracy Liang.
Tracy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
If I am being honest, SMILE-FX did not start as a business. It started as a problem I could not solve for my own family. And the embarrassing part is that I am an orthodontist.
A few years ago my co-founder and I went looking for the right orthodontist for the people we love most. Not just a competent one, the right one. Somewhere that took the clinical side as seriously as I do, and also understood that the person in the chair is a human being with a busy life, real nerves, and a thousand better places to be than a waiting room. We found brilliant clinicians in cold, dated offices. We found warm, friendly offices that were light on real specialty expertise. What we could not find, anywhere in South Florida, was both at once. After a while it stopped feeling like a search and started feeling like a sign. So we stopped looking, and we built the place we wished existed.
That hunt was humbling, because finding great orthodontic care is supposed to be my job.
I have always needed to know how things work. I was the kid who took the remote control apart just to see what was inside. That curiosity carried me to Cornell, where I studied biology and business at the same time, two subjects that would quietly become the two halves of everything I do now. I fell in love with orthodontics at Touro College of Dental Medicine, because it lives at the intersection of biology, engineering, and art. You read a face, you predict growth, you move bone and tissue with physics, and at the end of it a person smiles in a way they never have before. I graduated second in my class, received the Award for Excellence in Orthodontics, and was inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon honor society. Then I completed my specialty residency and a Master of Science at the University of Minnesota, where my research focused on imaging teeth in three dimensions. That thesis was my whole career in miniature, because I have always believed that the more precisely you can see a problem, the more beautifully you can solve it.
I became a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, the specialty’s voluntary, gold-standard certification, and a Fellow of the International Academy for Dental-Facial Esthetics. I had trained at the highest level the field offers, and I still could not find the place I wanted for my own family. That gap, the distance between what the science can do and what the experience actually feels like, is the exact space SMILE-FX was built to close.
We built it in Miramar, but we built it for South Florida and Miami-Broward, which is its own kind of place. Down here, confidence is practically currency. A huge part of who we treat are people building something of their own: models preparing for swim week, intermiami football athletes wanting to boost their confidence and breathing, content creators, influencers, founders, parents who want to give their kids the best chance at success and that confidence edge, and entrepreneurs. The always-on-camera and always-on-a-plane crowd whose smile is part of their brand. They cannot disappear for two years of metal braces and monthly office visits. They need care that moves at the speed of their life.
So we built an orthodontics practice that could actually keep up. And the way we did it is the part nobody else is really doing.
Most offices have added a piece of technology. A digital scanner here, a software subscription there. We did the opposite. We did not add AI to our practice. We rebuilt the entire practice around it.
At SMILE-FX, artificial intelligence runs from your very first scan to your very last day. When you walk in, we capture your teeth, your bite, and your face in 3D, no putty and no gagging, and our AI uses that data to map your entire treatment before we move a single tooth. Then AI Smile Simulation shows you your finished smile in advance. Sit with that for a second. In a city that lives on thumbnails, previews, and first impressions, you get to see the ending before the story even starts. You approve your result before you ever commit to the journey.
From there, AI guides the precision of the work itself. AI-assisted bracket placement positions everything with an accuracy a human hand alone cannot match, which is part of how we move teeth faster and more comfortably. We print your custom aligners and appliances in our own in-house 3D lab, so you are not waiting weeks on an outside manufacturer. And once you are in treatment, here is the part our on-the-go patients love most, the AI follows you home. With smartphone remote monitoring, you scan your teeth from wherever you are, and our AI reviews it and flags anything that needs my attention, so your orthodontist is effectively watching your progress between visits. It is like having me in your pocket. That is how we cut office visits by roughly forty percent and finish many cases in as little as four to six months, instead of the year or two people brace themselves for.
Together, that connected system is what we named AI BRACES™. It is not a gadget we bolt onto old methods. It is the spine the entire studio runs on. And none of it is technology for the sake of looking impressive. Every piece exists to do one of two things, make your result more precise or make your life easier, and usually both.
Here is the one line I never let anyone blur, though. The AI does not run your treatment. I do. Every single plan at SMILE-FX is designed and approved personally by me, a board-certified orthodontist and Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. The technology makes me faster, sharper, and more precise than I could ever be alone. It does not replace the judgment a specialist is supposed to bring to your face, your bite, your airway, and your long-term health. The future of orthodontics is not AI instead of a great doctor. It is a great doctor fully amplified by AI. That is the entire bet we made.
The other thing we refused to accept was the idea that a medical office has to feel sterile and stressful. So we did not build a clinic. We built a studio. We swapped the gooey, gag-inducing impression putty for quick optical scans, and we filled the space with the things that actually help a human relax. VR headsets, so a nervous kid can be somewhere else entirely while we work. Games. Genuinely calming touches that make the room feel more like a reset than a procedure. We have children who get upset when it is time to leave, which, if you have ever taken a seven-year-old to the dentist, you know is close to a miracle. We have adults who tell us their appointment was the calmest part of their week. And there is real clinical logic under the fun, because when people are not afraid, they show up, they follow the plan, and they get better results. Comfort is not a luxury we sprinkle on top. It is part of the medicine.
On any given week, the people in our chairs tell the whole story of this city. A bride a few months from her wedding. A model with a Swim Week shoot on the calendar. A founder about to spend a year pitching investors who knows the smile is part of the pitch. A flight attendant who is rarely in the same city twice. A high school junior who just wants to feel normal in the group photo. A dad in his fifties who decided this was finally his year. Different lives, same quiet wish, to feel good about the face they show the world.
The part I did not see coming was that the experience itself started getting noticed. SMILE-FX has been named Best Clear Aligner Provider in South Florida and honored with the Evergreen Award for Best Orthodontic Experience, and we hold an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. I am grateful for every bit of it. But if I am honest, the plaques are not what I check in the morning. A five-star review from a once-nervous parent, or a teen who finally loves their own smile, means more to me. And the recognition I hold closest did not come with a trophy at all. It came from our own city.
Being recognized by the City of Miramar for our work with its Caribbean and immigrant families has meant more to me than anything on a wall, because underneath all of this is the reason we started looking in the first place, confidence and family. We treat the whole family, in English, Spanish, and Mandarin, from a seven-year-old’s first visit, to a teen who wants to feel like themselves at prom, to a parent who has quietly wanted a straighter smile for thirty years and finally decided it was their turn. We get to do that for one of the most beautifully diverse communities in the country. Representation in healthcare matters. Walking into a place where you are understood, in your own language, by people who get your world, often decides whether you ever walk in at all.
If you ask me what I am most proud of, it is not a piece of technology or a number on a chart. It is that we took a private frustration, the simple inability to find the right care for our own family, and turned it into the thing that now changes how thousands of families and professionals across South Florida feel about themselves. A smile is one of the first things the world sees, and handing someone back the confidence to lead with it never gets old.
So where are we today? Still in Miramar, still a little obsessed with the same question that started all of this. How do you take the safest, most advanced, most intelligent orthodontic care in the field, and make it also feel like the warmest, the fastest, and the most human, for a life that does not slow down? That is the entire job, and I love it. If any of this sounds like the kind of care you have been looking for, for yourself or for your family, come see us at www.smile-fx.com.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The hardest part did not even come from the business. It came from home. Right as we were getting started, having just moved to South Florida to build this, my husband, my support in every part of this, suffered a major injury. For months he could not work. He was in real, daily pain, and he still tried to show up for our family through all of it. There were nights I sat in the quiet with the full weight of everything at once. Someone I love hurting and unable to do the things he was used to doing, a family to hold steady, and this big, fragile dream we had already bet everything on. There is a specific kind of exhaustion that comes from being scared and hopeful at the same time, for months on end. We lived in that for a while.
And we had, in fact, bet everything. We poured our savings into a vision that did not exist yet. Then the build itself fought us at every turn. Permits that crawled. A long, stubborn search for the right space in the right city, because the easy option was never the right one, and the right one meant waiting, and paying, and waiting some more. We could have settled a dozen times. We did not, because settling was the entire thing we were trying to escape.
Then there was the team. You cannot build a different kind of practice with people who only know the old way of doing things. It took real time, and a few hard goodbyes, to find people who shared the standard. People with the work ethic, the heart, and the same non-negotiable belief that the patient comes first, every single time. That search tested my patience more than almost anything, because I knew the vision only works if the people living it actually believe in it.
And underneath all of it was the question that kept me awake more nights than I will admit. What if we build this, and no one comes? You can have the credentials, the technology, the beautiful studio, and still lie awake doing the math, wondering if a single person will walk through the door you mortgaged your peace of mind to open.
Here is the part that still lights a fire in me. We were not exactly handed a chorus of encouragement. We were told, more than once, to keep it boring. Keep it clinical. Just copy what every other office already does, because that is what people around here are used to, and, the part that stung, what they “deserve.” I have never forgotten that word, because I did not believe it for one second. The families of Miramar and South Florida, the hardworking, on-the-go, building-something-of-their-own people of this community, do not deserve less. They deserve more. That quiet little insult turned into some of the best fuel we ever got. Every time it got hard, I remembered who I was doing it for, and who had quietly assumed we would settle.
So we kept going. My husband healed, slowly and not in a straight line, and even in his recovery he kept building this with me, which is its own kind of love story. We finished the studio. We opened the doors. And then the thing I had lost a year of sleep over actually happened. People came. One patient, then a family, then their neighbors, then people who drove past three other offices to get to ours. Word traveled the way it only does when something is genuinely different.
If I am honest, I would not trade the hard parts now. The struggle is baked into who we are. Every sleepless night was spent thinking about the patient who would one day sit in that chair, and that obsession is exactly the practice we became. The adversity did not just test the dream. It shaped it, and I think people feel that the moment they walk in.
So if you are out there building something you believe in, and the road is rough, and the loudest voices are telling you to play it safe and stay small, I hope our story tells you something simple. The world does not always cheer for the people trying to do it better. Do it better anyway.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
SMILE-FX® Orthodontic & Clear Aligner Studio is a board-certified orthodontic and clear aligner studio in Miramar, and we exist to give South Florida the orthodontic experience it actually deserves. We straighten teeth, yes, but what we really do is hand people back their confidence, faster and more comfortably than they thought possible.
We are a woman-led, minority-owned practice, and I do not say that as a checkbox. I say it because it shapes how this place feels. A lot of who we are flows directly from who we are, and we built somewhere that every kind of family in South Florida can walk into and feel genuinely seen.
We are a full-scope orthodontic practice, which means we care for the whole family and the whole spectrum of cases. For kids, we start with early evaluations and Phase 1 interceptive care, guiding growth at the right window so we can often prevent bigger, more invasive problems later. For teens, we offer Invisalign, clear aligners, and modern braces designed for the years when confidence matters most, from school photos to prom. For adults and busy professionals, we specialize in discreet options like clear aligners and hidden lingual braces, built around real lives and real calendars. And we lean into the complex cases that some offices quietly refer away, including difficult bites, impacted teeth, and airway and sleep-related concerns that go well beyond cosmetics. If there is one thing we are known for, it is taking the cases other people call too hard and making the whole experience feel easy.
What sets us apart is the way we put together three things the industry usually keeps separate. The first is real specialty expertise. Every single treatment plan is personally designed and approved by me, a board-certified orthodontist and Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, never handed off to a rotating cast of providers or a corporate script. The second is our technology, which we built into one connected system we call AI BRACES™. AI helps us plan your case with precision, shows you a simulation of your finished smile before we move a single tooth, guides the accuracy of the treatment, and then follows you home through smartphone remote monitoring, so we can track your progress between visits. That is how we deliver results in as little as four to six months with roughly forty percent fewer office visits than traditional care. The third is the experience. We did not build a clinic. We built a studio, with optical scans instead of putty, VR and games to melt away anxiety, and a team that welcomes patients in English, Spanish, and Mandarin.
If I am honest, the people I think about most when we make decisions here are moms. I am one, and SMILE-FX began as the search for the right care for my own family, so I know exactly what that mental load feels like. Moms are usually the ones managing everyone’s appointments, everyone’s worries, and everyone’s schedule, and they are the ones quietly deciding who to trust with their child’s smile. So we built the practice I would want as a mom. Fewer visits, because your time is not endless. A calm, almost fun environment, because a relaxed child is a child who actually cooperates. An orthodontist who explains the why in plain language instead of jargon, so you can make a confident decision for your kid. And flexible financing, because investing in your child’s confidence should never feel out of reach. When a mom tells me she finally exhaled in our waiting room, that is the whole job.
If you ask what I am most proud of, brand wise, it is not any single award, though we are grateful to have been recognized, including the Evergreen Award for Best Orthodontic Experience and an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. What I am proudest of is what those things point to. We proved that you do not have to choose between elite clinical care and a warm, human, modern experience. We proved that a woman-led, minority-owned studio in Miramar could raise the bar for an entire region. And we did it while staying the kind of place we would send our own family, which was always the only standard that mattered.
So what I most want your readers to know is simple. World-class orthodontic care should not be reserved for a few, which is why we offer complimentary consultations, including a 3D AI Smile Simulation, with zero down options, zero percent financing, and most major insurance plans accepted. We are not trying to be the biggest orthodontic office in South Florida. We are trying to be the one you would send your own family to. If you would like to see what that feels like, for yourself or for your kids, we would love to meet you at www.smile-fx.com.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I love this question, because SMILE-FX® was built to be part of the community, not just a business that happens to sit in it. We are a woman-led, minority-owned studio, and a lot of what drives us is the belief that confidence should reach every kid and every family, not only the ones who already know to ask for it. So the best way to work with us is simple. Help us put confidence into more hands.
A few collaborations we are genuinely excited about.
Schools and families. We would love to partner with schools, PTAs, and youth programs across Miramar, Pembroke Pines, Weston, and the rest of Broward. Bring us in for smile screenings, for honest parent education about when a child should first see an orthodontist, which the experts put at around age seven, and for fun, pressure-free events that make kids and teens actually want to take care of their smiles. So many families do not realize early orthodontic care is even an option for them, and changing that is one of the most meaningful things we can do.
Young athletes and teams. We would be honored to serve as the official orthodontic provider for local sports, dance, and cheer programs. Confidence matters on the field and off it, and standing behind the young athletes in our community is exactly the kind of partnership we want to build. If you run a team or a league, let us talk.
Models, fashion, and creators. Given who we already take care of, this one is close to home. We would love to collaborate with modeling agencies, with fashion and Swim Week events, and with the content creators and influencers who make Miami what it is. If your brand quite literally runs on your smile, we would love to be the team behind it.
Fellow providers, and future ones. We work hand in hand with plastic surgeons, pediatric dentists, pediatricians, and ENTs, especially on complex bites and airway and sleep-related cases. If you have a patient who needs specialist-level orthodontic care, we are a safe, board-certified place to send them, and we will always send them back to you with a thank-you. And on a personal note, I care deeply about mentoring the next generation, especially young women and students from backgrounds that are still underrepresented in medicine and dentistry. If that is you, reach out. I remember exactly what it felt like to need someone to open a door.
And then there is the simplest way to support us, which also happens to mean the most. Come see us. Refer someone you love. Leave an honest review if we earned it. Tag us when your new smile makes its debut. Every family who trusts us, and every person who shares our story, is the reason the next family finds their way to us.
If any of that sparks an idea, my door is open. You can reach us at www.smile-fx.com, call or text (954) 824-9707, or just slide into our DMs at @thesmilefx or our youtube https://www.youtube.com/@TheSMILE-FX.
We are always up for a good collaboration with people who care about confidence and community as much as we do.
