Today we’d like to introduce you to Tina Carberry.
Tina, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve been interested in photography ever since I can remember. My dad was ALWAYS taking pictures on family vacations and any event that my brothers & I were a part of. I got my first camera when I was nine years old, then in high school, I was a part of putting the yearbook together.
During my four years at university in Tampa, my love for photography grew, and I ended up being the primary event photographer for the Caribbean Student Association on campus for three years. This led to the growth of my clientele spilling into working with various modelling troupes, sororities, fraternities & other local businesses in the area. After graduating, I moved back home to the Broward County area, where I worked at a medical office for five years. I started realizing the possibilities & the potential that I had in building my own photography business, and after a ton of prayer and re-building my clientele in South Florida, I decided to quit my job and go full time. It was and still is the best decision I’ve made thus far and I can’t wait to see what the future holds!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There have definitely been wins along the way that have helped to remind me that I am on the right path, but as with anything in life, the victories don’t come without battles and struggles. I’m so grateful for every obstacle that I’ve faced because I’m determined to only learn and grow from difficult situations. There is no failure, only redirection.
Honestly, one of the primary struggles that I’ve had to face along the way was a lack of confidence in myself and my abilities. I would always make the excuse of “there are already thousands of photographers out there, the market is saturated, etc”. But over time, I’ve learned to not only value myself as an individual but also as a photographer. Anytime anyone asks me how long I’ve been doing photography, I always shock myself when I remember I got my first high end camera back in 2011! That’s almost ten years of learning, growing, and developing the skills as well as the creative eye that I have today. Giving myself credit for the amount of time and effort I have put into my craft is also something that’s helped me gain confidence.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am a freelance photographer that primarily shoots portraits, fashion, and events. I’m most proud of being able to create & celebrate moments with people. Everyone has an individual story and I want to be able to highlight that in the most professional, creative, and inspiring way possible. It’s always an honor & privilege for me to be able to bring someone’s ideas to fruition or help them commemorate a special time in their life. I also love being able to take the time to get to know each client I work with. The more I get to know who they are, the easier it is to come up with amazing creative concepts that speak to their vision.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Right now I have a photo project lined up with an incredible & innovative streetwear brand out of New York, and I’m also looking to expand my photography into a new field of work, so stay tuned!
