Today we’d like to introduce you to Theresa White.
Hi Theresa, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit I was always selling things. I started in retail at age 15, working for Macy’s because of my love for fashion. My Mom was the quintessential fashionista. She had an eye for fashion that was always spot on. My sister and I both got that from her but I think my sister would agree I have it just a little bit more than she does. In my day job, I’m an executive for a leading biopharmaceutical company. The experiences I have working with hospital CEOs and other health professionals truly help me in developing strategies and action plans to move my own business forward.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. E-boutique is a very saturated business and finding ways to stand out and have products that are unique is difficult, however, the fact that I get to combine my love of fashion with my love of selling is enough to keep me driven. In the beginning, another struggle was getting those closest to me to support me. It was extremely disappointing to start a business, be excited about it and not have my extended family and some friends be as enthusiastic about it as I was. Over time they began to trust that I was building a legitimate brand and eventually, the support came.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Chic By T?
Chic By T is my brand name however, the name of my company is THERETBI which is derived from the Coco Chanel quote, “to be irreplaceable one must always be different”. THERE (short for Theresa) To Be Irreplaceable. I like to think that my brand is for the woman who wants to embody Chic, Sexy, and an irreplaceable appeal all at the same time. I specialize in clothing that truly reflects that. Dressy, sexy and Chic dresses, rompers and jumpsuits. I don’t do casual unless it’s extremely Chic; it’s just not what the brand represents. You won’t see loungewear on our website again unless it embodies some aspect of Chic that reflects the brand.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck is real opportunity meets preparation and my success is very indicative of this. A huge turning point in my earlier launch years was having a close friend wear one of my designs on the red carpet at the Grammy Awards. It was a very lucky moment for me that I was even called on to style her as our friendship was very new at the time and there were others she could have called on. However, being prepared by having two one of a kind red carpet gowns she could choose from on hand definitely made a difference. The credibility of my brand was catapulted and others started lending their trust for my styling services which definitely translated to increase business for the boutique.
