Meet The Loc Whisperer

Today we’d like to introduce you to The Loc Whisperer.

Hi The Loc Whisperer, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started my journey back in high school in 2007. My mom was actually my first client—I started her on her loc journey, and that experience inspired me to loc my own hair as well. Growing up with six siblings—five sisters and one brother on my mom’s side—doing hair was a part of our daily lives. My sisters and I became each other’s walking advertisements, styling each other’s hair and perfecting our craft. Before I knew it, students at school were hiring me to do their hair, and soon after, kids and adults in the neighborhood were paying me too.

That’s when I really started to understand the beauty and diversity of our hair. The textures, the curl patterns—each one unique, yet all requiring care, patience, and creativity. I took the time to learn how to work with our hair in a way that kept it healthy while allowing for self-expression through different styles. Over the years, I’ve developed my own tips and tricks to enhance and maintain locs, which ultimately led me to create a premium line of products, including The Loc Whisperer satin-lined adjustable beanies, nourishing hair oils, and hydrating mists.

Once I loc’d my own hair, I fell in love with every stage of the journey. Having locs is a true experience—it evolves with you. I’ve experimented with color, grown my locs down to my waist with bangs, then cut them into a shoulder-length bob, only to grow them out again. Now, four years later, my hair is back to my lower back. That’s the beauty of locs—they’re as dynamic and expressive as you are.

With all the experience I had gained over the years, my best friend Aja encouraged me to take it a step further and make it official. That’s when The Loc Whisperer was born—I applied for my LLC, and my passion became a business. Since then, my journey has been nothing short of amazing. I’ve had the opportunity to work with people from all walks of life, from elders in the community to babies as young as one, and even celebrities like Trippie Redd. The love and support have been nonstop, and I couldn’t be more grateful.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Since getting started, I must say this journey has been a beautiful one, filled with incredible individuals. However, it hasn’t always been smooth. One of the biggest challenges I faced was the lack of inclusivity when it came to hair care products in stores. My clients and I constantly struggled to find caps that fit our hair properly or products specifically designed with locs in mind. I was always on the hunt for something better—until one day, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I sat down with a chemist and began developing a line of products designed to keep locs healthy, free of buildup, and free of harsh chemicals. That challenge ultimately turned into an opportunity, allowing me to create solutions not just for myself but for the entire loc community.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am The Loc Whisperer, and my work is rooted in passion, creativity, and care for the loc community. I specialize in cultivating and maintaining healthy locs while creating unique, expressive styles that reflect each individual’s personality. My goal is not just to style locs but to educate my clients on how to care for them so they can thrive.

What sets me apart is my holistic approach. I create a serene, upscale experience where clients can truly feel valued and cared for. Locs are more than just a hairstyle; they’re a journey, a lifestyle, and a reflection of self. I take pride in offering not only expert styling but also premium products designed specifically for locs, free of harsh chemicals and buildup.

I’m most proud of the community I’ve built. From working with elders and babies to celebrities and everyone in between, the support has been incredible. Seeing my clients embrace their loc journey with confidence and knowing I’ve played a role in that is truly rewarding. At The Loc Whisperer, it’s more than hair—it’s about empowerment, education, and celebrating the beauty of locs in all their forms.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I wouldn’t consider myself a risk-taker because I walk by faith. But looking back, I know some would call my journey risky. In 2019, I took a leap of faith and left my full-time job, where I was thriving professionally but never felt completely fulfilled. No matter what, I never stopped doing hair. Before I ever stepped into a salon, I was doing clients’ hair at home—before and after work, whenever I could.

One day, I asked myself, What would happen if I freed up my time and fully committed to my passion? So, I resigned, rented a chair at a barbershop, and decided to give it my all. I’m blessed to say I’ve never had to look back. That experience taught me that sometimes, you just have to take that step, trust yourself, and see what happens when you give it your best. God is great 🙂
