Today we’d like to introduce you to Telena McGhee.
Hi Telena, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I love food and I am a foodie. I’ve traveled to many countries and I feel the best way to experience someone’s culture is by trying their food. I officially started Sweet T’s Puddin N Pie during the start of the pandemic. However, I’ve been baking since I was 16 years old, making cupcakes and magic cookie bars which are a combination of graham cracker, chocolate, coconut and nuts. So, in actuality, Sweet T’s has been in the making for years but in May 2020 a local baker by the name of PJ The Cake Man referred his customer to me who requested four sweet potato pies. I posted them on social media and the rest is history. I decided to create Sweet T’s Puddin N Pie to spread love one pie at a time.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting a business comes with many obstacles and challenges. I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker working full time at a K-8 center and High School. Trying to navigate my profession which is a challenge within itself and my business has not been easy at all. I had to set boundaries for myself and others in order to run my business in a manageable way without being burned out. There are also shortages on supplies and the cost of ingredients are so expensive right now because of this never ending pandemic so naturally prices have to go up and sometimes explaining this is a bit underwhelming. I also work by myself and having one oven isn’t enough especially during the holidays. However, this is all a learning experience and I’ll work through every challenge.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Sweet T’s Puddin N Pie LLC?
Sweet T’s Puddin N Pie LLC wants to make your day better one dessert at a time. I specialize in uniquely flavored Cheesecake, Sweet Potato Pie, Apple Pie, Banana Pudding and Brownies. All of my desserts are made to order so this ensures that your dessert is always fresh and made with the highest quality ingredients, with local delivery options available. I tell my customers that stressed spelled backwards is desserts! I’ve had so many customers tell me that they were having a bad day but when they ordered a dessert, they immediately felt better. Other customers have told me that my desserts remind them of their grandmother’s recipes which to me is one of the best compliments I could receive because my grandmother is the inspiration behind my business. My sweet potato pie recipe is hers but with a twist! Unfortunately, my grandmother has dementia and doesn’t bake anymore so I rely on the holiday memories and excitement I felt growing up each time I smelled a pie in the oven. I am proud that Sweet T’s gives so many a taste of childhood and a sense of nostalgia. The outpouring of love and support I’ve received from the community has reassured me that Sweet T’s will be here to stay.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory is spending time with my family, Especially my cousins. I enjoyed the road trips, birthday parties, dance offs, the laughs. My cousins were my first friends and I honestly miss those moments.
