Meet TC Silk

Today we’d like to introduce you to TC Silk.

TC Silk

Hi TC, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been interested in music my whole life! Ever since I could remember, I’ve been wanting to perform and record music. I’ve been playing trumpet since I was 8 and went to performing arts school, so my interests have always been super wide because I love to listen to everything.

I got into the local scene thanks to some of the older people at my high school, like Sam Lang, who took me under their wing by letting me join their funk band. After they graduated, I played solo or in different bands until the end of high school, and once I no longer had people to jam with, I started trying to get into making “chillwave” on my computer which was super cool at the time.

My college roommate got me super into Lil B and the whole-based movement, and he was the one who pushed me to tighten up and learn how to make hip-hop beats. This is around the time I took on the moniker of “Yung Tarzan”. I started making beats for my friend “Flex Oden”, who is an amazing rapper and songwriter, and we fleshed out a really fun and unique sound and had a natural vibe in the studio. From there, we just grew and grew, and he taught me a lot about how to rap and write songs in this genre.

We dropped a lot of music and played a lot of DIY shows between 2012 and 2018. One of the sickest highlights was playing at the legendary show in West Palm with Xxxtentacion and Wifisfuneral, where X wasn’t allowed to play inside and ended up performing on top of the car in the parking lot.

Things were really starting to rise, but I took a serious break in 2018 to get my life together a bit, and now I’m back with a new name and a sound that I think is much better!

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve encountered a lot of loss along the way and I’ve always had to work for what I’ve had since I was young, but I think it all inspires my sound. It’s interesting growing up in West Palm Beach because there’s so much class disparity, but we all kind of intermingle.

Trying to keep up with people who were born with and will always have money was a challenge for sure, and I ended up facing a lot of the consequences that a lot of my friends will never have in their lives.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a rapper, a producer, and a musician! I’m proud that I’ve been able to perform in this area for as long as I have been!

I think I’m different from other rappers because I’m not afraid to rap about my insecurities, I make all my beats, and have a very poppy and melodic style.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love West Palm Beach because it’s such a melting pot. I love that you can sit at a bar and be next to a billionaire and they might offer you a drink or even some other fun drugs. I love that everything is open all night. I love that it’s tropical and you can grow all the Jamaican fruits here. I love that I can go to Miami easily but not have to live there.

I hate West Palm Beach in the winter because everyone from up north comes and spreads their hateration everywhere. Now, they’re staying all year and building the city in their image. It’s getting too expensive for the locals, and I feel like soon everything will be made for the out-of-towners.
