Today we’d like to introduce you to Tania Aristide.
Tania C. Aristide is a Licensed Professional Braider, Natural Hair Care Specialist and well respected Hair Consultant in the South Florida area. Tania began her journey at the age of 10 when hair knockers, beads & barrettes were fashionable. Tania’s “big break” began in her West Miami Dade community styling local friends and family members or anyone she can find. At times, she would receive compensation, and other times she would only gain the experience. Throughout high school, she wrestled with her love for Performing Arts and being a Hair Stylist. In 2010, Tania received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Florida Atlantic University. Tania was well on her way to a wonderful Education/Performing Arts career.
But, that itch for hair care just wouldn’t go away. Tania would then return to school at Aveda Institute of South Florida where she excelled and would later graduate and continue her journey as a hairstylist. Tania’s distinctive work can not only be seen in the Miami Dade, Broward county area. But, all over the Southeast region of the US (Atalanta) and California. Tania believes her highest achievement in the hair industry is not the Pro Beauty Association Beacon Award that she achieved her competition in Las Vegas, Nevada. Tania believes her highest compliment/achievement is when clients would book round trip airline flights to Miami so Distinct Styles to perform “Magic.”
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Business owners are usually faced with different challenges. These challenges can either make or break you. Like they say, nothing good comes easy. I struggled with finding a healthy balance. I had to learn how to balance life as a Wife, Mother, Sister, Friend, Daughter and Business Owner. I struggled with prioritizing self-care. I focused my attention on my family, clients and business. I had to be the best mom, wife and business owner. In reality, I was in competition with myself. My family showed me a reflection of myself and I was drained and burned out. Was it healthy? No. Have I gotten better? Yes, and I’m proud of myself. Also, the power of knowing when to say “NO” is pretty effective.
Please tell us about Distinct Styles by Tania.
DSBT stands for Distinct Styles by Tania. My mission to merge natural hair to modern day hairstyles. I specialize in natural hair care and protective styles/braid specialists. I am the creator of the Interlock Mohawk, Lobstail & 1920’s braided updo.
I am known for the interlock Mohawk…. and it set me apart Bev it’s distinct. Atleast, 75% of my clients come for that style.
I am most proud of the level of growth I have achieved so far. I met cosmetologist, trichologist, braiders and hair care specialist that has shaped me in many ways.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I have so many… Growing up, I was that child who was involved in school plays, chorus, pageants, sports, hair competitions and church ministries. I must say I was living my best life. I was fearless! I explored it all! It gave me a chance to find my identity. So, do I have one favorite childhood memory no. I have so many…. like my first stage play, my first tennis and volleyball game. My first trip out of Florida for a chorus competition. My first pageant. My first hair competition. I’m so grateful for every memory and the people I have met throughout those years.
