Meet Syke

Today we’d like to introduce you to Syke.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I began taking an interest to writing music about two years after I graduated High School. Me and a few friends would always freestyle around each other, and eventually, they started telling me I should record some of my verses into songs. I didn’t take any of them seriously, cause I was so opposed to the idea of trying to be a rapper, we were just freestyling in our free time.

Eventually, though, they convinced me a bit more and I started writing a full song. Looked up some beat on YouTube, wrote a hook and two verses, and recorded it at a home studio set up a friend of mine had. After showing the song to some friends, they pushed me to take music more seriously and release it. From there I started looking into things a bit more.

I told myself that if I was gonna be releasing music, I don’t want to be put into that “Generic Soundcloud rapper” stereotype that a lot of people have. I wanted to make sure the quality of the music itself would sound professional and the songs to stand out a bit more. I started learning about how songs are mixed and how beats are made. I made an Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter so I can promote the music, released the song and started writing more after getting such good response.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely has not been a smooth road. I mean, we were getting an amazing response from the songs, but learning about the music industry is a process. A lot of trial and error when it comes down to promoting the music, getting on a stage, trusting people. Some people are supportive, others think I shouldn’t even try. It’s definitely a bumpy road, and we’re still learning now.

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I’m a rapper based in South Florida. I’d consider my music to be pretty versatile compared to others. I have smoother songs that can be melodic or tell a story, I have harder songs that are more aggressive. I don’t want to be boxed in too tightly when it comes to my music. It’s fun making my ignorant songs, but sometimes I get sad, and so I make sad songs.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think it has to be the individuality of my songs, not just compared to other artists, but also compared to the rest of my music. Like I said, one song can completely contradict the feeling of another one, which can go against the feeling of the next. If I want to use a fast beat, ill make a fast song. If I want to rap over some acoustics then ill do that. If I want to freestyle ill use an old school beat, and if I want to sing ill sing. I think because of that versatility, I’m able to reach a lot of different people.
