Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Saint-Come.
Stephanie, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born and raised in Kendall which is a part of Miami that’s pretty diverse but was predominately Hispanic and white in the 90’s. Growing up in the suburbs and going to magnet schools for French (Sunset Elementary) and Music (Southwood Middle, Coral Reef Senior High) taught me that preparation beats nerves and people will accept you when you’re winning. I never blended in and I wasn’t always accepted because of that, but I’ll never forget the feeling I felt when I sang in front of my class. I was in Elementary school and it didn’t matter if they were my enemies or my friends, they showed me love.
After that, I was convinced my gift of music had meaning if it could bring people together even if just for a moment. I went on to explore Opera and placed 1st in Musical Theatre my Senior Year of high school in the State Competition. My love for music has gotten me so many opportunities to travel the world (All over Florida, Miami) and meet amazing people. It wasn’t until I released a single in Trinidad in 2017 “Hold It Down” that I saw another avenue to explore. We didn’t shoot a. video and that was an opportunity for the song to circulate. When I landed in Miami, I gathered all my paperwork to do my FASFA. I wasn’t long before I was officially enrolled in the SEDT Film and Digital Production Program at MDC North Campus.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It wasn’t a smooth road. I’ve been told lies about myself since I was in Pre-school and sometimes all my teachers did was tell me to ignore them. As a result, I didn’t believe in myself. I thought I needed magic, or that I needed to share a stage with pretty or fair-skinned Caribbean girls to be seen. It took everything falling apart till all was left was me to see I was enough. I feel so thankful for people like Oprah Winfrey, Zoe Saldana, and Viola Davis for paving the way. Seeing them shine made a difference. I want to make a difference like that for someone out there because representation matters.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
SAINTCOME is my brand. I am an artist. A lot of people ask me what it means. It’s my last name. For a while I wanted to change my name and choosing it as my brand was an act of total self-acceptance. I am so proud of the many hats I wear. I collaborate and model for local brands like Le Roxi Kari, ACID NYC, Cooyah Clothing, and even Hill Harper’s Skin Care line Be The Architecht. I am and actor that has appeared in Short Films “When She Flies”(directed by 3x Emmy Award Winner Danny Rodriguez), “Zoe 911” (directed by Paul Antoine & Ido Eyo), “Made Son” (directed by Herman “Caheej” Corneille) and others. I also do Voice Overwork and host an Award-Winning TV Show “MDC-TV News Flash”.
I’m also the lead singer of The Uncanny Reservoir. We perform and host events all throughout South Florida (Wynwood Yard, Esquina De Abuela, Miami Roots Kava, Las Rosas…) where poets, musicians, and artists of all kinds can express their creativity.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I think I was about 8 or 9. One summer, my dad drove my mom, my older sister, and I up to this sweet resort in Orlando. It was my first time going to Islands of Adventure. My parents divorced when I was very young so it meant the world to me that we could have a normal family vacation like old times.
