Meet Soulpax of Miami

Today we’d like to introduce you to Soulpax.

Hi Soulpax, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Soulpax is a multi genre band that sprouted from a longtime friendship. We, Julian and Julia, first met at a Livingston Taylor master class when we were 17. From there, we went to Berklee College of Music together, where we started the band. In the beginning we made an overly-artsy, art rock EP with some of the original members. It’s safe to say it will never see the light of day again! After experimenting, we discovered our love for Retro Soul and RnB. We took those genres, sprinkled a bit of latin flare on them, and went in that direction for our first album. Once coming back to Miami from Boston, we quickly evolved to Indie Funk and released a few singles like “Magic 8” and “Tired of Your Sh*t” under that vibe. Now, we’re turning into a new chapter with our new album: Pastel Hearts. It felt right to move into Vapor Soul, City Pop, heavy synth, harmonized guitar solos, and nostalgic lyrics. We’ve been through a lot together, musically and as friends, and we’re more proud of this upcoming project than any other release we’ve made to date. We are beyond stoked to share it with you!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of our biggest challenges as a band has been going through a lot of members. It always had to do with artistic differences, players getting more involved with other bands, moving cities, and things like that. There was never any bad blood involved, so in many ways we thought of our band as an on going collective, but the truth is, we always longed to stick with the same people for years. Many great players have come and gone, influencing our genre with their individual artistry, but the good news is we finally landed on the dream team: Juan on bass and Dingo on drums. We also have our fantastic keys player, Ben Beal, though he’s on a hiatus right now being that him and his lovely wife, Liana, just had a baby. It’s been a challenge not having him around as much lately, but we’re so happy for him and his family!
Aside from that, we’ve been through the wringer with our share of bad deals and contracts. Some of those things have set us back a few years behind the progress we had originally envisioned, but any successful band could tell you that the path is never linear. We’ve just had to pick our selves back up, dust it of, and keep moving. Call it character development, but we think thats part of what make our music the way it is today. No regrets!

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
We’ve got some great artists we work with around town, namely Ionit Studios and Sentient Sound. Ionit has helped us make a number of super fun music videos, and of course we’d be remise if we didn’t brag about our producer, Bradley Gagne, from Sentient. He’s helped us really flesh out the fine details of our new sound. These days, we track ourselves and send the stems over to Brad, which keeps things pretty productive. We’ve had the pleasure of working with a lot of great photographers like Loegan Jarro, Evan Garcia, and Miranda Reinike (credited here in some of our photos), as well as Andres Delgado, Julia’s husband, in the videography and album cover realm. We also get a lot of graphic design help from friends like Jack Muldavin, who designed some great shirts for us. We’re lucky to have a lot of people behind us who see eye to eye with our vision!
When it comes to music artist collabs, we’ve had the great pleasure of releasing a song with Raquel Lily, who continually inspires us with her musicianship, work ethic, and internet outreach. Coming up, we have a collab with our friend PRIZILLA that will appear on our new album. She’s a great singer and absolutely rips on sax, so it will be a great tune. We’re already writing new material for after our Pastel Hearts album, so if you know of anyone you want to see collab with us, hit us up!
