Meet Soulfiya of Miami / South Florida

Today we’d like to introduce you to Soulfiya.

Hi Soulfiya , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Honours, manners, and respect. I am Soulfiya, I’ve been making music for over 20 years. From playing percussion, then keys, to fronting my own projects, producing for myself and then a litany of talent across the globe. Every time I hit a wall I create a way through. I love collaboration but I’ve come to rely on my own abilities more and more as I go.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like most artistes it’s been an uphill journey since day 1, but I’ve been blessed with some real validation in my career. I never coulda dreamed of having thousands of people every month listening to my music, let alone all the success on the charts, and the travel.. Alla that really makes the struggle sweet.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m known as a Ragga artiste, and that is most definitely my specialty. Ragga is a hybrid Caribbean genre that combines dancehall, soca, and elements of reggae and (in my case) chutney. I’ve collaborated with some of the biggest names in the scene, people that I grew up idolizing like Apache Indian, Mighty Sparrow, and King Kong, as well as new school visionaries like El Dusty & Yungg Trip. But to me, my biggest accomplishment was starting my own production collective, GY2MX, and giving some agency to Guyanese creatives by showcasing what we are capable of in the larger markets.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Be you, unapologetically.. There was a time where finding your tribe could be a daunting task, but the Internet made that archaic. Find spaces where people are achieving what you’re dreaming of and go make yourself known.. It’s that simple
