Today we’d like to introduce you to Simona.
Simona, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
It all started when my baby girl was born, back in 2015. When she was 3 months old I started to think where to put all the toys. I was looking for something that would be nice, colorful, practical, safe and that my baby would like it. I came up with idea to crochet a basket from ropes. I made one. Then another one. Then I made more baskets for my stuff in bathroom, then for various items in bedroom. When my friends and family saw what I am doing, they also wanted the same things for their home, for gifts and so on.
When my baby girl was sleeping, I was looking, where I could invest my time and get some extra money. As I was crocheting baskets, I thought that I could sell them. And I found Etsy. I started selling my crochet baskets on Etsy, but nobody bought it. I loved this new hobby and I new that there should be a way, how to get customers. I saw that people on Etsy are selling crochet patterns. I did not know, how to make these patterns, but I started learning. It was not easy, but I spend lots of time practising and learning. And the patterns that I made were a success! Not millions of sales, but for the start it was a perfect motivation for me.
I was raising my daughter Luka, then I came back to office work and I was spending time during late evernings with my passion for crochet. Step after step, after working hard every day, learing every day, I was gaining more and more attenction and respect from my clients.
And only in 2021 I could spend my full time for this passion as a full time job. I am still working a lot: all day, weekends, vacations, late nights, but I love it! And I hope I will be able to do this for a many years agead.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I was not an easy way for sure. The world is full of everything and to create somethig that attracts is super hard these days. My road from hobby to business was very long and I was moving forward in small steps. I was doing everything by myself. And this is the way I am still doing today. This is a big challenge for me, but I just can not dedicate the tasks to others, as I am a perfectionist. My business is like a third child for me that I can not leave for nanny.
When I started on Etsy, everybody around me was not supporting me at all. They were being sarcastic and negative, and saying: “Who will buy from you”? But this made me even stronger and I was thinking every day: “I will prove you, that I will create a business from this”. And I did!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am crochet designer and I can teach. I am not only creating amazing crochet designs, but I am also teaching others. I am creating written crochet patterns and crochet video tutorials and I think I am doing it perfect! I am getting many good words and feedback about my tutorials and how it is easy to follow. So I am kind of a teacher for others, inspiring and motivating others to create and spend time crocheting. Which we know, that crocheting is a perfect way to relax and spend quality time not only for your brain, but also to make something very beautitul for yourself or for someone special.
