Meet Sidney Sherman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sidney Sherman.

Sidney, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am originally from the Jersey Shore and traveled to Miami to begin school at the University of Miami. There, I studied advertising and art and got a taste of what the commercial world is like assisting photographers and designers on local projects. Very fast, I realized how nit-picky the ad world is and knew I was meant to create art truly for myself. Five years ago, I would have never thought that I would still be at UM now perusing my MFA in photography. This program has opened up so many opportunities to explore my style of photography and teach others this beautiful craft.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Nothing about being an artist is smooth! I have struggled a lot with the idea of making images for other people when really my best work has always been when I listen to my own intuition and not get caught up in what other people expect to see. It’s hard sometimes to show work that is very personal to you, but that is the beautiful thing about using art based to explore and understand personal feelings and experiences.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Sidney Sherman Photography – what should we know?
I can’t truly pinpoint what type of photographer I am meant to be and I like that. I started off as a documentary photographer but now have transitioned primarily into a fine art portrait photographer. I have a passion for studio lighting and photographing people – mainly covered in fabric. I love to experiment with different colors and textiles and how the body and fabrics interact.

When you look back, what are you most proud of?
The proudest moment in my career so far has been the opportunity to show my images in different group shows during this past year.
