Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheri Griffin.
Sheri, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Hello, my name is Sheri Griffin. I own “Sheri Griffin Photography” in beautiful Islamorada, Florida Keys. I am a self-taught scenic photographer who has always appreciated the beauty and presence of nature. Growing up my parents were always taking photographs of our daily adventures. There was always a camera around! My dad even prints them and hangs them along his ceiling beams. It is a true blessing to be able to capture a moment in time and cherish it forever. Pictures have always seen a major staple to my life. My photography journey started in 2015. It began with a Go-Pro hero four and progressed from there.
My adventure started out a little differently than most. I invested in a professional camera before I even knew how to use it. Something was just calling me to do photography and focus on it full time. I taught myself by taking photos everyday and studying from camera professional, Scott Kelby. Then after hurricane Irma, I released my first calendar, “Beautiful Scenes of the Florida Keys,” and that was the start of my photography career. I also have another side to my business where I make air plant “jellyfish” out of hurricane Irma sea urchins and blooming air plants. The hurricane washed thousands of sea urchins ashore that I currently restore and make the “jellyfish” with. I display my air plant “jellyfish” and photography at local art shows and seafood festivals in the keys. I have an online photo gallery, an online Etsy store and I am also available to meet clients by appointment at my gallery in Islamorada.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Honestly, I’m grateful to say things just came together for me. The hurricane opened up different opportunities for me because that is when I gained the confidence to set up at shows to make a living. It also started the air plant part of my business. The first two years were a lot of work. It still is. But if you have a true passion for doing what you love you will find what it takes to be successful to do it. Don’t give up!
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am known for displaying my photography and air plants at markets and festivals throughout the Florida Keys. I try to attend every major festival here. I print my scenic photography on various mediums, including fine art metal, wrapped canvas, local lobster trap framed prints, photo calendars, drink coasters, coffee mugs, mousepads and more.
I offer my air plants as “jellyfish” with a sea urchin on top, in terrariums, hanging in beautiful macrame (local made), driftwood art and more!
I am proud to say that I run every part of my business and work hard at it everyday. I love showing the beauty of our islands to viewers who admire it just as much as I do. I also broadcast live sunset videos on my Facebook page daily @ Sheri Griffin Photography.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Currently, through the pandemic, my online store has been doing very well. Mother’s Day was very successful for me. It will be interesting to see how the events and shows playout for the upcoming holiday season. I also plan to have my storefront transition from “appointment only” to being steadily open a couple of days a week.
