Meet Shawn Escott, a Painter in Boca Raton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawn Escott.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born in Ohio in 1975 and have been making art my entire life. The day I picked up a crayon is the day I knew I wanted to be an artist. In 1993, I won a full scholarship to The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and graduated with a degree in Visual Communications.

I worked in advertising and design for over 20 years, always painting and drawing at night, on the weekends and on my lunch breaks. I visited galleries, museums, libraries, anything to increase my knowledge and love of art. When you have a passion for something, when it’s in your heart and soul, you’ll search high and low for it like hidden treasure, finding many gems along the way.

I studied for a short time at the Lyme Academy of Art in Connecticut but I’m mostly self-taught. I’ve spent countless hours reading, studying, attending workshops, talking with mentors, getting critiques by friends and working hard!

Now, I’m at the point in my life where art is at the core and every day is an adventure. I’m getting to do what I love while enriching other people’s lives with my art.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Being an artist has its ups and downs. Like any small business you are the owner, marketer, accountant, PR person, etc. This can definitely be difficult but at the end of the day, you are your own boss, living the life you want and enriching people’s lives with your talents… there’s nothing like it.

Please tell us about Shawn Escott.
I’m an artist specializing in Plein air painting. “Plein air” simply means in the open air or outdoor. I also paint studio works which I would categorize as emotionally charged conceptual narratives.

I’m extremely proud to be part of a wonderful network of artists and art lovers. The camaraderie has been life changing for me and is only getting better. I’m also proud to have achieved professional acknowledgement through galleries, magazines, news stations and television. However, what makes me the most proud is seeing a person’s face light up when they see my work and love it enough to take it home with them.

What sets painters apart are their styles. The way they compose, lay down paint and the messages they want to convey. We are all unique and I believe this is where I stand out. I’m expressing my own views of the world in paint.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Life is about learning and the only way to learn is from experience. Some have been good and some bad. Of course, we would like to fix all the bad ones but maybe that wouldn’t be wise. Those bad ones are meant for a reason.
