Today we’d like to introduce you to Sharmila Hall.
Hi Sharmi, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I began my career working for one of the top 3 franchise consulting firms in the nation as an Account Manager. My job was to identify businesses that would do well by the means of franchising and explain why the business would grow exponentially through the power of franchising. I was riveted by business, reading the stories of entrepreneurs on how they started and scaled their business. I enjoyed studying the industry so much, that I used to call Entrepreneur and Franchise Times Magazines my bibles. I couldn’t wait to read the next issues. I had a very diverse book of franchise business with over 32 successful franchise business concepts, everything from quick serve restaurants to services like taxes and healthcare business.
One day I read an article on Franchise Times about a serial entrepreneur Jim Abrams. He spoke about the future of healthcare franchising and why he saw Physical Therapy as one of the most favorable franchises of the future, although there was not many healthcare businesses franchised, he saw a significant future in it and explained why. I felt like I was interviewing him and totally understood what he was saying. A little light bulb went off in my head and I decided I needed to hop on the train and find a Physical Therapy business to franchise. After some research I set my eyes on 3 outpatient Physical Therapy practices in Miami. I called the owners, the very first conversation was Andy Zapata of Physical Therapy NOW. He answered and we got to talking, he totally understood why franchising makes sense for health care businesses and we set up a meeting. Eventually, I would go on to franchise all 3 of the PT practices I set my eyes on. Andy’s business model was incredible, he made a VERY complicated business easy to operate because of the systems he had established. Andy was an expert at not just establishing systems to operate the business and scaling them (5 locations) but also driving the business and networking. He franchised his concept and I decided to help Andy grow his startup franchise. My idea was, I would not only have created franchises as a franchise consultant but also grown one from the ground up. Working side by side with Andy as a mentor I became Physical Therapy NOW Executive Franchise Vice President. I scaled the business model from 5 locations to 70 in Florida and Texas. Along the way, I learned everything about the business and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to own one. This is where my career in business ownership began…
I partnered with my older sister to open our first business and to buy the Physical Therapy NOW Franchise in the FIU territory. From month one, I made sure my sister followed all the systems for management and operations the franchise outlined. Remembering conversations with PT NOW CEO about how important it was to build relationships with referral sources, I focused on that for our first business. My schedule allowing, I went out and established relationship with referring doctors throughout our community, explaining how we provide comprehensive and compassionate car and a full hour of treatment. Our worked paid off and Physical Therapy NOW FIU was awarded the TOP performing facility in the franchise in its first year.
About a year later, my husband and I decided to start our next business venture with a therapist friend Daylen Revilla. Starting this business made me proud, I was able to come together and help a friend who always dreamt of business ownership get started. Together, we eased her fear of starting a business and helped her get started. Because of my experience from having opened multiple other franchise business as the Franchise Vice President, we opened our next business in under 3 months and today our PT NOW Coral Gables location is the Top Performing Physical Therapy Center for the PTNOW Franchise. My business partner Daylen, no longer treats, together we focus on growing businesses. We work on our business not in our business.
This brings me to my next 3 businesses. Because my business partnerships went so well in the first two businesses, my partners and I were looking to diversify but remain in business together. In my search for diversification, I met the CEO of Facial Mania Med Spa Franchise Marcello Cesarani. As we got to know each other, Marcello was impressed with my experienced and asked me to come on board and help him grow the startup Facial Mania Med Spa Franchise. Although, I wasn’t looking to particularly go to work for someone, my passion is simply helping people realize their dream of business ownership while mitigating risk and making a much safer investment than being an independent. I love the relationships I have created with other entrepreneurs in helping them find personal and financial freedom. As of 7/12/2021 we have 3 Facial Mania Med Spas in development and build out with locations in Coral Gables, Kendal and Midtown. We also own the rights to develop Doral and Tampa in 2022.
My favorite part about my career & business ownership is not only are we helping entrepreneurs become business owners but were also helping the community and economy by providing about 10-15 jobs per location.
My goal is to get to 18-20 Franchise business units while opening 3 businesses per year.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Around 3 years ago, my husband and I began having children. We have two babies, Kate and Jacob Hall. The biggest challenge I have had in my career has been learning work life balance. Prior to my children being born, my career and businesses were my babies. I used to work on the weekends, after hours, any time really. I love what I do so much I worked until the day before both of my babies were born and even went back to work immediately. I didn’t take any time off. I obviously can manage my own schedule, but I didn’t stop. I learned that I needed to balance my life better to spend more time with my family, I learned that issues that happen after 5PM will still be there tomorrow at 8AM. Today I focus on spending between 5-9pm with my kids every night and every weekend and if I must work on a weekend, I take two days off to spend with my kids during the week.

What makes you happy?
First and foremost, what makes me the happiest is having personal and financial freedom, TIME to spend with my FAMILY. Prior to my husband retiring to focus on the business, he worked 60–80-hour work weeks and couldn’t join me for holiday parties with the kids. When we wanted to take vacation, my husband didn’t always get the ability too. He was always stressed because he didn’t have enough time with the kids, and I was stressed because I had to do activities alone without my husband. Since my husband retired to focus on our businesses, we have time! Time with my family makes me the happiest.
I’m also so happy that my business operates on cruise control allowing my partners and I to travel together and host fun events for our team! The beauty in creating businesses that work systematically is that we can step away and the businesses continue to operate without us.
What makes me happy throughout my career is my passion for working, teaching connecting and helping others. I enjoy sharing success and watching people’s journey while realizing their dreams of business ownership. It makes me happy to meet new people and continuously learn from them. Continuing education and perfecting my craft makes me happy. You see the beauty of what I do, of franchising is not we are in a network of experts of different industries coming together to see the success of one or multiple brands. There is something to learn from everyone. Finally, growing successful businesses, while helping the community look and feel better is and proving jobs for the community makes me happy!
