Hi Sara, so great to have you join us again. For folks who might have missed our earlier conversations, can you please take a minute to briefly introduce yourself?
I’m a Systems’ Approach Vedic Astrologer, consultant, and educator. I specialize in helping people with career, relationship, and health advice using the stars as our guiding light.
Can you tell us about your background and education and how you first became attracted to Vedic astrology?
I became interested in Vedic Astrology at a very young age through my father, David Hawthorne who began studying astrology long before I was born. I can remember him telling me when I was going through particularly rough periods of time, exactly when things would get better and he was always right!
After receiving a degree in Theatre Arts from the University of Iowa and a short three year stint as an actor in Los Angeles, I discovered performing was not my purpose in life, but rather Vedic Astrology.
Over the years, I have studied the connection between the transit of the planets and the events in my own life. I have also learned the importance of doing the planetary remedies for my own chart, for smoother sailing in life.
In 2016 I was conferred the honorary title of Jyotish Saraswati by SIHA (Systems’ Institute of Hindu Astrology) and by Professor V.K. Choudhry of Gurgaon, India.
What is Vedic (vey-dik) astrology and how is it different from Western astrology?
Vedic Astrology in India is known as Jyotisha. Jyotisha means the divine science of light on time and karma. So when we do a Vedic Astrology reading we shed light on the person’s horoscope.
Vedic astrology is said to be more than 5,000 years old. It was originally written in Sanskrit, the mother of all languages. It predates Chinese, Egyptian, Greek, and Western astrology.
It is based on the sidereal zodiac which takes into consideration the wobble of the Earth’s axis or what is known as “precession of the equinox”, unlike the Tropical Zodiac which is used by Western Astrologers and is based on a fixed position of the planets more than 2,000 years ago.
So yes, this means the horoscope you’ve been reading in the newspapers and magazines will be different from what I would tell you, which may blow your mind a little but trust me, this is the real deal.
The rising sign or your ascendant used by Vedic Astrologers is much more specific to you. It is based on the exact time, place (longitude and latitude), and date of your birth. So If you were to ask an astronomer at the time of your birth what sign was ascending they would agree with the Vedic astrologer rather than the Western astrologer.
What do you say to those who do not believe in astrology, or to those who do not think astrology is really a science?
No science on earth can reveal all the mysteries of life. However, that being said, I have had very good results with the knowledge of Systems’ Approach to Vedic Astrology. The vast majority of my clients tell me my readings are accurate, relevant, and helpful. People know when you are speaking the truth. Vedic astrology is a divine science and lets you see the past, the present, and the future.
I think the validity of astrology comes up for people so often because not all astrology is the same and not all astrologers are using a system. This often times leads to confusion and contradictions and can then give the field of astrology a bad name!
Systems’ Approach to Vedic Astrology which is what I practice takes the guesswork, intuition, and contradictory principles out of the horoscope reading because it’s based on a scientific paradigm and provides accurate, relevant, practical and REPLICABLE readings.
What do you focus on during a consultation?
What I’m trying to accomplish with a reading is: First, I, share with you how the planets are truly operating in your life. I do not give sugar-coated false hope. I assume people want the truth about their horoscopes.
There are 12 houses in a chart and there are 9 planets. Each of these houses represent different areas of life, longevity, health, wealth, home life, children, marriage, career, friendships, etc. Based on the position of the planets in the horoscope we can see what areas of life need more support.
Nobody has a perfect chart. We all have some weakness, some affliction, some debilitation, or some bad placement of planets. This is why we have health and financial issues, obstacles, delays, disappointments, setbacks, accidents, losses, and separations.
So we find these planets and we give the twofold planetary remedies to help. Everybody can strengthen their favorable planets (through gemstone and color therapy), and propitiate (honor) the planets causing adverse effects (through charities and chants). These remedies are fun, simple, effective, and make you feel good!
Lastly, we’re going to cover the timing of events. Life does not happen all at once even though sometimes it feels that way. Life happens according to the hands on the clock and we have that clock. It’s called the Vimshottari Dasha Sequence. We can see the past, the present, and future general trends in your life. This allows us to know when we have some periods of smooth sailing, and when we have some periods when we should slow down and not take risks or chances in order to manage adverse effects.
In addition to charts for the individual, can you also do charts for marriages, corporations, partnerships, etc.?
Yes. At any given point in time, there is a chart for that moment. For example, when someone marries, or starts a new company, or is sworn in as president of the United States, there is a chart for that exact moment, as though a new baby is being born.
This is why it is important to consult with an astrologer for the best time to start any activity – such as getting married, buying a house, starting a new business – to ensure maximum positive results. In this way, the marriage will last, the investment pays off, and the business is a success.
You can also see when this has not been done. For example, we can look at the charts where there has been a divorce, investment loss, business bankruptcy, etc., and clearly see the event was started at a bad time.
We can also look at charts for the moment of earthquakes, plane crashes, wars, etc., and these calamities can be easily seen.
Another good use of astrology is compatibility readings to let people know if prospective spouses, partners, employees, etc., have good charts to support these endeavors, or if they need remedial measures for better results in life.
Can anyone learn Vedic astrology?
Absolutely! There are only four elements in astrology: 1). The houses 2). The signs 3). The planets.4). The timing of events, or planetary periods.
With the free information, I offer on my website or through my online course “How to Become A Systems’ Approach Vedic Astrologer” and my one on one mentorship classes anyone can learn the basics in just a few months. And if they practice these basics consistently for about a year, they can become a very competent astrologer. Over time, the person can become a professional astrologer, helping others understand their horoscopes.
It was so great to reconnect. One last question – how can our readers connect with you, learn more or support you?
Please email me at sara@planetarysara.com for a complimentary rising sign report. You do need to know your exact time, date, and place of birth. This includes information regarding the person’s rising sign, Sun sign, and Moon sign. The report also discusses the most favorable planets in the person’s chart and simple ways the person can strengthen those planets for even better results in life through color and gemstone therapy.
It also includes information on what planets the person should not strengthen and what he or she can do to mitigate the negative effects these planets have on their life.
The report will also indicate what your main period and sub-period planets are. These are known as the operating planets and these show what is best for the person to focus his or her attention on at the present time — whether it be health, career, or relationships.
