Meet Sal Avila of Quality Picture Frames in Hialeah

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sal Avila.

Sal, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
For over 40 years, Quality Picture Frames has been a pioneer in the framing and arts community. We’re the leading provider of custom framing since 1968 since founded by Saul Avila Sr. (1938-2013). Our staff has over 75 years of experience in the fine art and framing industry. Our services have been tailored to meet the needs of interior designers, architects, artists, museums, corporations, fine art dealers and private collectors. All our work is done in our 7,000 sq. ft. facility.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Nothing is ever smooth. The art scene in Miami 1970s-80s was very slow because Miami was just a seasonal town. In the early 2000’s Miami grew and provided us yearly work; we have clients from all over the world now that need interior decor services (framing, art consulting, crating, shipping, storage, delivery, and installation) and now we cater to big art events like Basel, too. Another challenge is our location—we drive about 25,000 miles a year in servicing our clients face to face. That’s a lot considering we’re just 25-30 minutes from posh locations like South Beach, Wynwood and Brickell. Simply put, clients want face-to-face care.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Our focus has been to excel in the fine art world. We specialize in art handling, installation, shipping, pickup, restoration, custom gold and silver leaf framing, and acrylic boxes, We are best known for our exquisite gold/silver leaf museum framing and superb installation services. What sets us apart from other locations is the range of work we do: we take walk-ins just like everyone else, ship and cater art pieces from around the world while still offering that personal one-to-one customer care. There is no job too large or too small for us to work on.

What were you like growing up?
I grew up in the art business following in the footsteps of my father (Saul Avila). I got to meet and work with Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, and Dorothy Blau. It has been a privilege to be involved in such a creative and diverse industry and business.
