Meet Robert King III King June of The June Tape

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert King III King June.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I got started producing my second semester in college. A local producer (Risky Beats) who was just starting out, gave a FL 8 or 9 just to mess around with and I started cutting samples and making beats. Other than that my only interest was basketball I didn’t really take it serious until about 2013 and my college career was over. I think when I was younger I had a drum set around age seven but other than that no piano lessons or anything.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all. I think in anything there’s a process of learning and a bunch of obstacles that come with it. It starts out fun and then the practice that you have to put in to get good at it, its a lot. I think trying to diversify my sound has been the hardest. Playing by ear is cool but the struggles begin when you wanna build what you can do as far as melodies and drum patterns etc. Not to mention the business side, reaching out to artists, communicating, marketing, learning different price points, etc. Putting out The June Tape was crazy. We lost jobs, had eviction notices, faced repossessions, and still had to push through and market, A&R, and create something dope.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
Most people know me from playing basketball in high school or at UCF but recently stepping out into the music scene The June Tape has been the wave. People love the samples from the 70s to 90s and early 2000s and thats what I’ve been most creative at, flipping samples. Reintroducing a sound or a familiar sample in a different way is probably what sets me apart. And it being done in a sort of a Florida beach cruising type of way. Until recently the Florida music hasn’t had its impact on the world yet. I have some upcoming music with the group 300lbs of Guwop, Smook The Mad Man, Crown and a few artists from Florida.

What have been some of the most important lessons you’ve learned over the course of your career?
I would have taken some piano lessons and networked more.

Pricing:

  • Beat Leases ($20-$30) (but I’m starting to step away from this)
