Meet Rey Zamora of Rey Zamora Photography in South Miami

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rey Zamora.

Rey, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My love affair with photography began later in life. Throughout my upbringing, I struggled to find a creative output. I tried many different mediums, from writing to cooking, I found a lot of hobbies, but never quite a passion. Like most people in life, I followed the beaten path. I went to school, got my degree, and joined the workforce. After years of drudging through the same 9 to 5 cycle, I decided I’d had enough. One night over dinner, and quite by chance, a good friend and I struck up a conversation. We had been speaking for a while about how unfulfilled I was feeling, his words to me where “Man, if you’re so unhappy, change it. Why don’t you come shoot for me”? At this point, I didn’t even know how to hold a camera, so the prospect of becoming a professional photographer was completely foreign to me. That conversation, however, changed my life. With the unrivaled support of my now wife, friends, and family, I was off to the races. I borrowed an old camera and began to take pictures of anything and everything. I was eventually able to afford a slightly better camera, started booking gigs, completely convinced that I was in over my head. While I was never formally trained, I spent countless sleepless nights reading about photography, ingesting any and all information I could to hone my craft. That’s when it clicked. I fell into old photography. I would stare at old black and white photos for what seemed like hours at a time. I quickly developed my own style, as an homage to that era of photography. I began to take chances. I acquired the confidence to be different. My perspective of the world changed, I began to see beauty in everything, and thus, my passion was born.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
This is a bit relative. Was it smooth? Absolutely not. Was it smoother than most? That’s a resounding yes! I’ve been blessed to have an incredible support system. This has allowed me the freedom to progress so rapidly in my career. I’ve many a struggle along the way, but I kept pushing through. In this profession, it never gets any easier. You have to continue to push through the bad times, focus on your work, and never look back. You have to take chances to set yourself apart, and with those risks comes the chance of failure. This has never scared me, just another learning opportunity.

Please tell us about Rey Zamora Photography.
Rey Zamora Photography is all-inclusive. I love all realms of photography. To me, they all hold their own intricacies, that’s why I have made it a point to be well versed and educate myself in different disciplines. My favorite subjects are people. I consider myself a visual storyteller. My specialties are lifestyle portrait photography, along with street documentary style photography presented in a unique style. A callback to the golden days of the art.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I don’t think I would have done anything differently to be honest. While it may have been easier to start earlier, go to school, learn in a traditional classroom, that wouldn’t be me. I would have never created a unique style. I wouldn’t have gone through any of my trials trying to learn this art. Whether it was fate or chance, everything happened exactly how it should have.
