Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Sneed.
Rebecca, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Cake Crazzie started as a home hobby. I would have friends and family that would want really neat, cool looking cakes and I was thought to myself, I can do that. So I started doing a little research, began dabbling a little here and a little there and viola, Cake Crazzie was born. My first really big cake was for my father’s wedding. I was a 4 tier wedding cake with Mickey and Minnie on top. Everyone loved it so much, and I had so much fun making it.
Eventually, I began getting requests from friends of friends and Brides to be. After I met David, my husband in 2013, we would talk and talk about the future and what I wanted and where I saw my self-going. I had already shared with him my passion for making cakes, and I realized that I really enjoyed being able to be creative and express myself through the cakes I had made. So, I told him I really wanted to start my own cake business. From then on, he has been my biggest supporter the entire way.
Currently, I am still based out of my home, but my passion has turned into a business instead of a hobby. This year I have partnered with a few Event Planners, as well a Photographer and have begun participating in more Wedding Expos as well as partnering with a few local non-profit organizations and Charity Events where I have donated cakes. My goal is to take Cake Crazzie to a Store Front location.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Getting where I am today has been a very long and difficult road. Aside from going through a divorce and becoming a single mother again, as a business just starting out, one of the biggest struggles is and continues to be getting my name out there as well as finding funding to generate advertisement and participating in expos and events.
Cake Crazzie operates under the Florida Cottage Food Law. Up until recently, anyone operating under the cottage food law could not exceed gross sales of $15,000.00 per year. That has recently changed, and now gross sales cannot exceed $50,000.00 per year. This is a huge win for home based businesses.
There a number of other restrictions contained within the cottage food law, so another struggle is making sure I keep up with the requirements.
Cake Crazzie – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Well like I mentioned before, Cake Crazzie, is a home-based business operating under the Florida Cottage Food Law.
We specialize in Custom 3-D Sculpted Cakes, Cupcakes, Cake pops, Wedding Cakes, and Special Occasion Cakes. I think that what sets Cake Crazzie apart from other cake business are the 3-D custom cakes. You can’t just go to the grocery store and pick up a 3D sculpted cake.
I am always up for a challenge and love the artist side of sculpting a cake. I pride myself on the fact that, to date, I have not used rice crispy treats as a tool for sculpting. I like my cakes to be … cakes. In addition, I believe what sets Cake Crazzie a part is the attention to detail. I spend a great deal of time with my clients to make certain they get exactly what they pay for. I take time to discuss the style, look, and theme of a potential cake and then I go even a step further and actually sketch the cake that I have envisioned to make certain it is the same as what the client has in mind.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment had to be the very first wedding expo I did. To be honest, I was a complete mess and so nervous especially since there were other cake vendors there.
David helped me so much, not only was he encouraging me to do the expo, but he helped me prep everything and set it all up.
At the end of the day I learned that although brides do attend expos to get ideas and potentially book a vendor, the real goal is to network with other vendors.
