Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Mortimer.
Rebecca, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Before launching this women’s empowerment network, I’ve always had a passion to work with women. When I was younger, I would mentor girls and give them advice and share insight with them on various issues that they were faced with. I remember having such a strong desire to empower women, so much so that at just 25 years old I launched a group called “Girl On Fire”. I hosted just a couple of events, but during that time, I had just gotten married, went back to school to obtain my bachelor’s in nursing, and was pregnant with my daughter. So clearly there was a lot going on for me and my plate became too full. Because of that, I decided to put “Girl On Fire” on an unintended long pause. Fast forward five years later while finishing up my master’s degree in nursing, I remember turning 30 years old and feeling a great sense of accomplishment with my career goals, being married, starting a family, buying a house, but there was still a slight void. I felt as though I was missing out on my true passion which is to empower and inspire other women. I remember during the final stretch of pursuing my master’s degree to becoming a nurse practitioner, I started to feel that strong nudge again. You know that feeling you get when it’s time to execute your purpose? That’s what I felt. To make a long story short, I stopped ignoring those feelings and decided to relaunch, but this time with a different name, hence Fix My Crown Sis. This women’s empowerment network is intended to shift the mindset of millennial women and help them become the absolute best version of themselves. We host a series of local events in the Miami area where we network with different amazing women. Since launching in February of 2019, and in addition to being a board-certified nurse practitioner, I went on to become a certified women’s life empowerment coach where I assist women with building effective strategies to execute their goals.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Like anything in life, when you decide to pursue your passion there will be fear, doubt, and some times feeling like you’re unqualified to do what you know deep down inside you were called to do. That was a major challenge for me before launching this empowerment network. I’ve always been pretty confident, but I was still faced with those negative feelings. I had to get to the point where I learned to quiet the noise (doubt and fear) in my head just enough to take a leap of faith. The doubt and fear doesn’t always go away…you just have to learn to turn the volume down and just move! I always say, if your goals and dreams don’t scare you…chances are they aren’t big enough!
Please tell us about Fix My Crown Sis.
Fix My Crown Sis is a women’s empowerment network that I started alongside my co-founders, Sabrina Dieuvelhomme, Weslande Letang, and Sheena Ausirus. We host a lot of different events that bring women together for a cause. Last year, we hosted our very first event in May which was a successful sold-out empowerment brunch with over 70 women in attendance. Later on that year in October we hosted another successful sold-out event. Fix My Tiara, which was a mommy and me event for moms with daughters. Then just recently in January of 2020, we collaborated with two millennial financial advisers who own a company called The Finance Duo and hosted a financial workshop for women called Fix My Finances Sis. In addition to hosting events, I offer coaching services and mentorship programs to women looking to become a better version of themselves.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I’ve always been very ambitious and goal-oriented. I didn’t always know exactly what I wanted to do but I was always on a journey to discovering my God-given purpose. I’ve always been outgoing, caring, and very social, so it’s no surprise that I love planning and hosting empowering network events.
